The Future of Seb
In recent months, the motorsport community has shown a growing interest in bringing four-time Formula 1 World Champion Sebastian Vettel back into a prominent role—whether behind the wheel or in a leadership position off the track. Various speculations have emerged regarding the possible future of the German driver, ranging from a return to racing in Formula 1 to potential executive responsibilities within the sport.
At first, rumors hinted at a comeback to Formula 1 racing itself, with Audi and Red Bull Racing mentioned as potential destinations. Then came speculation that Vettel could become the successor to Helmut Marko, taking over as the senior advisor for Red Bull’s driver development program. The idea of Vettel taking on a role similar to Marko’s gained some traction within the paddock.
In March 2024, Sebastian Vettel himself fueled speculation about a return to racing when he participated in a test session with Porsche, sparking suggestions that he could compete in endurance racing events such as the FIA World Endurance Championship or even the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Now, a new theory has emerged—though once again, it seems to be coming more from the outside world than from Vettel himself. This latest idea involves a far more institutional role: becoming President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the governing body of global motorsport.
This proposal is not entirely new. According to an article published by the German publication Auto Motor und Sport, the idea of Sebastian Vettel as a future FIA President had already been suggested in the past by Ross Brawn. The highly respected British engineer and former F1 managing director of motorsports expressed the belief that Vettel would be an ideal candidate for the FIA presidency due to his immense experience as a driver and his deep understanding of the sport.
In addition, it is worth noting that Sebastian Vettel previously served as chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), the collective body that represents Formula 1 drivers. This background has already given him some exposure to the political and regulatory side of motorsport governance.
Despite the growing enthusiasm around this idea, Sebastian Vettel himself has dismissed any involvement in the upcoming FIA presidential elections scheduled for 2025. Current FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is seeking re-election, and he will be challenged by Tim Mayer, another figure well known in the world of motorsport.
Not Now, But Maybe One Day
“I don’t know enough about the responsibilities of an FIA President,” Sebastian Vettel said when asked about the possibility, as quoted by Auto Motor und Sport. “From the Formula 1 perspective, you only get to see one side of that role. I have some understanding of it, but not enough to make a proper assessment. It would be unprofessional to say now: yes, I could imagine it. Ross Brawn can evaluate it better because he had more direct contact with the FIA and understands what kind of person fits that role.”
These words certainly suggest a closed door—for now. However, they do not completely rule out a future shift in that direction. Sebastian Vettel has long been known for his strong interest in social, environmental, and political issues beyond the racetrack. Should he eventually step into the role of FIA President, his responsibilities would extend far beyond motorsport regulation to include global initiatives and leadership in areas such as sustainability and mobility.
The 2029 election cycle is still many years away, but by then, the former driver of Red Bull Racing, Scuderia Ferrari, and Aston Martin might feel better prepared to embrace such a challenge. What seems certain is that if Sebastian Vettel were to ever pursue a top-level role in motorsport governance, he would have considerable support from within the Formula 1 paddock.
