Ruth Buscombe is leaving the Alfa Romeo team. The head of the strategy department announced her departure from the Italian team in Abu Dhabi, during the last Grand Prix of the 2023 Formula One season, which was held at the Yas Marina circuit. In a social media post published in Abu Dhabi, Buscombe describes it as her “last dance.”
“I’m sitting on the Alfa wall for the last time,” writes the engineer. “Until the last checkered flag for a place I’ve called home for the last eight seasons.”
Ruth Buscombe recalls joining the Sauber team when she was only 26 for her very first season in Formula 1. “After what feels like a lifetime, I am grateful to everyone in Hinwil, past and present, for everything,” she continues – “An incredible rollercoaster since 2016; for the opportunity to grow as a strategist in a life where Formula 1 and the paddock truly become a home.”
She concludes with thanks for the “beautiful memories (especially P6).” Finally, she expresses her wishes for the “next chapter,” which remains to be understood.
Could Scuderia Ferrari be her next destination? Ruth Buscombe worked closely with Fred Vasseur at Sauber, overseeing the race strategies for a young Charles Leclerc. The plan of the Ferrari team principal could be to restructure the internal setup of the Maranello team. Earlier in the year, the Frenchman had already taken a significant step forward by replacing Inaki Rueda with Ravin Jain. However, it seems that this area continues to be insufficient for the Italian side.
