How much does the Mattia Binotto legacy weigh? Current team principal Fred Vasseur explains the mission to “restructure” Ferrari, while looking optimistically towards Monza.
Fédéric Vasseur spoke to the microphones of Sky Sport Italia at the end of the 2023 Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix, touching on various points including the Mattia Binotto legacy and the upcoming weekend at the “home” of Monza.
“Is this your first year at Ferrari? Is the legacy of this car too heavy to try to develop it differently?” Federica Masolin asks during the interview. The French manager does not want to embrace this thesis and avoids the pitfalls: “I don’t want to think that it’s a matter of legacy or not. We have to do our best both at the factory and on the track.”
However, Fred Vasseur lets slip the desire to change several things he found at Ferrari that he evidently didn’t like. “Not everything is perfect,” the French team principal tells Sky IT, “but we are improving.”
“How?” a fan might wonder. Fred Vasseur continues: “We’re pushing, we’re hiring a lot of people. However, we know that we need to restructure the system: the best thing is to do better work until the end, step by step. I hope Monza represents a step forward.”

He then moves on to the topic of “Monza”. The Monza stage of the championship awaits Formula 1 next weekend, and Fred Vasseur understands the importance of the Italian GP for the Prancing Horse: “First of all, I hope for a different result compared to Zandvoort, also because the track is completely different.”

The Ferrari boss hints at cautious optimism: “This weekend we had many ups and downs, but it was the same for everyone, even during the same race. The margins are so tight that you can quickly go from second to tenth place.”
Finally, he explains how to present oneself well in Italy: “For Monza, we have to prepare well to put everything together and thus do a good job.”
