LATEST UPDATE. The nationwide strike of trains and public transport scheduled for May 17, 2025, has been revoked, effectively saving all the fans planning to reach Imola using public transit. The reason behind the cancellation and its rescheduling to May 23 has nothing to do with Formula 1. The decision was made to avoid disruptions during the enthronement Mass of Pope Leo XIV in Rome.
This move rescues the 2025 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix weekend, which could have turned into a logistical nightmare for thousands of fans. The protest had been declared by several trade unions, who had planned a 23-hour work stoppage (from 1:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.) for the entire transport sector. The strike would have affected railway companies, freight transport by rail, and local public transport (LPT).
Imola at risk: public transport strike scheduled for May 17, 2025
For those planning to reach the Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit by regional train or bus, the difficulties could have been significant. Rail connections from Bologna and other nearby cities—essential for fan access—were at high risk of cancellations and delays. Urban and intercity buses could also have been subject to changes or sudden suspensions.
Qualifying Saturday is one of the most anticipated moments of the race weekend, with thousands of fans ready to crowd the Imola grandstands. The strike could have seriously affected the experience for many and caused major logistical and organizational headaches.
May 17 would also have been a major test for the local mobility management system. Regional and municipal authorities were expected to activate emergency contingency plans to minimize the strike’s impact, including additional shuttle buses, alternative access routes, and spectator assistance services.
It remains unclear whether minimum service time slots would have been guaranteed, as often happens during strikes, since no official announcements had been made yet by the involved transport companies.
For those who already purchased tickets for the Imola GP, it is advisable to plan alternative travel arrangements in advance, opting for private vehicles, car sharing, or dedicated shuttle services if available, to avoid missing one of the most iconic events on the Formula 1 calendar.
