The crucial weekend at Yas Marina does not begin on the right foot for the Monegasque driver of the Prancing Horse, who was forced to stay in the garage for much of free practice 1 due to an issue with his car. Ferrari’s mechanics are working on Leclerc’s vehicle to avoid a grid penalty for the Abu Dhabi GP.
The green light for FP1 of the final race weekend of the season in Abu Dhabi does not bode well for Charles Leclerc and Ferrari. In the first half of the session, only one SF-24 is on the track, driven by his brother, Arthur Leclerc. Charles initially gets into the car, then gets out: there is no solution yet, as the car has a problem to be fixed, and #16 has to wait.
Ferrari problem: Is Charles Leclerc at risk of a penalty in Abu Dhabi?
Cameras focus on the Prancing Horse’s garage, where mechanics gather around Charles’s red car. After placing the SF-24 on stands, the team disassembles the floor and works underneath the vehicle. The issue seems to involve the battery pack, a component with which Leclerc has already reached the regulatory limit.
After half an hour of work on the car, the cameras show a smiling Leclerc. The mechanics begin reassembling the Ferrari, and the driver heads out on track for the second phase of FP1.
Whether the battery pack has been replaced or not is still unknown. If Ferrari were forced to homologate a new component, Charles Leclerc would receive a grid penalty for the Abu Dhabi GP.
