Piero Ferrari recalls Michael Schumacher’s 1996 Monza win and lasting Ferrari legacy

Piero Ferrari, 2025 F1

For Ferrari, Monza is a place of emotion and memory. It is not simply the venue for the Italian Grand Prix and the Scuderia’s home race: its straights, corners and grandstands have helped shape an important part of Ferrari’s identity. Cars change, regulations change and generations of people come and go, but whenever Formula 1 arrives in Brianza, one element seems to remain untouched: the relationship between Ferrari and its supporters.

Ferrari Vice Chairman Piero Ferrari has witnessed decades of Prancing Horse history and experienced Monza from a privileged perspective, watching both Formula 1 and the Maranello team undergo profound transformations. Yet whenever Ferrari returns to the circuit, he still finds the same passion. That connection has particular resonance in 2026, 30 years after Michael Schumacher’s first season with Ferrari and his memorable victory at Monza, with the Scuderia also preparing a special SF-26 livery inspired by Michael Schumacher’s 1996 Ferrari.

“Every time we arrive at Monza, what strikes me most is the warmth of the fans. Monza has always been a special place for Ferrari and there is always an expectation that the team can do something special, regardless of how the season has gone up to that point. The unique atmosphere of the circuit, the support of the fans and the passion you can feel there transmit a special energy to the whole team, encouraging both the team and the drivers to give their maximum.”

It is a dimension that can hardly be separated from Ferrari’s history. Racing at Monza is not simply about scoring points or securing a victory: every result carries a different significance there. The fans accompany the team, support it, judge it and, above all, share its ambitions. It is precisely this energy that Piero Ferrari believes has remained unchanged despite everything that has evolved around it. Monza’s place on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar therefore represents much more than another race weekend for the Maranello team.

Michael Schumacher’s 1996 Monza win changed his bond with Ferrari fans

Thirty years ago, in 1996, Michael Schumacher arrived at Monza during his first season as a Ferrari driver. The Scuderia had not yet become the dominant force it would develop into during the years that followed, but the German was already beginning to make his mark. Michael Schumacher had claimed important victories in Spain and Belgium before achieving something even more significant at Monza: winning in front of Ferrari’s home supporters.

That day remains firmly embedded in Ferrari’s memory, not least because of what it represented for the developing relationship between Michael Schumacher and the Tifosi. The livery Ferrari will use this weekend draws inspiration from the 1996 car, symbolically reconnecting the present-day Scuderia with one of the most significant chapters of its modern history.

“At the beginning of the Schumacher era, Ferrari was not yet in a position to fight consistently for victory, but Michael was still able to achieve great results thanks to his extraordinary qualities. The 1996 Monza victory is a perfect example: it was the performance of a great champion, achieved in a place that has a special meaning for Ferrari. I believe that day was also important for the relationship between Michael and the fans.”

“He had only been at Ferrari for a few months. He had already won in Spain and Belgium, but winning at Monza, in front of that crowd, helped create a bond that would become stronger and stronger over the following years. Michael understood what it meant to race for Ferrari and how important that was to our fans, and I believe that is also why he became so deeply rooted in their history and affection.”

It is difficult to tell the story of Ferrari in the years that followed without also beginning with that relationship. Michael Schumacher was not merely the driver who eventually brought the Formula 1 World Championship back to Maranello after an extraordinarily long wait. He was also someone who progressively understood what it meant to be a Ferrari driver, eventually becoming one of the most representative figures in the history of the Scuderia.

The 1996 Monza victory came at a time when Ferrari was still searching for the form and structure that would ultimately allow it to dominate Formula 1. That is precisely why the result carries such significance today. It was not simply another victory, but one of the earliest chapters in a relationship that would grow into something far greater.

Michael Schumacher’s working method left a lasting legacy at Ferrari

When Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari legacy is discussed, there is a temptation to focus primarily on statistics, victories and World Championships. Piero Ferrari instead highlights a different aspect: his working method. It may be here that the German champion left one of his deepest marks on the culture of the Scuderia.

Michael Schumacher brought an extremely analytical approach to his work, moving beyond a driver’s instinctive feel for the car and using data as a tool to understand and correct every detail of his own performance. The same philosophy of detailed analysis remains central to modern Ferrari technical development and analysis, even though Formula 1’s methods and technology have changed dramatically since the 1990s.

“Yes, that’s true. During Michael’s time there was an important change in the way we worked. Until then, the development of the car had mainly been based on the driver’s feel, his comments and the technical data collected at the track. Michael took it one step further: he began to study himself inside the car in great depth as well. I remember he would take the computer containing the telemetry data home to analyse every detail of his driving, understand where he could improve and identify the points on the circuit where he could make the difference.”

“This approach, which was extremely methodical and data-driven, had a profound impact on Ferrari’s culture and is still reflected in certain practices within the team today. Naturally, times were very different.”

Piero Ferrari continued: “At the time, it was possible to carry out far more testing, and all that analytical work was used to prepare practice, qualifying and the race as effectively as possible. Today the regulations limit testing much more, but the principle remains the same. Michael demonstrated how important it was to study every detail, use data as a tool for improvement and prepare with maximum attention even away from the track. I believe this ability to analyse his own work and continuously look for something to improve is one of the most significant legacies he left Ferrari.”

It is a legacy that reaches beyond one particular technical era. The possibilities available to Formula 1 teams have changed, private testing has progressively been restricted, the amount of available data has grown enormously and the work carried out by an F1 team has become increasingly sophisticated. Yet the principle identified by Piero Ferrari remains relevant: analyse, understand, correct and constantly search for another margin of improvement.

Why Michael Schumacher’s Monza legacy still matters to Ferrari today

Perhaps that is the most interesting way to interpret Michael Schumacher’s symbolic return to Monza, 30 years after that victory. It is not only about a livery recalling a Formula 1 car from the past, nor exclusively about remembering the successes achieved by the German champion. It is also about a working method that, according to Piero Ferrari, continues to live within the culture of the Scuderia.

Monza therefore becomes a meeting point between Ferrari’s past and present. On one side is the warmth of the Tifosi, unchanged across generations; on the other is a Ferrari team that continues searching for the small margins capable of converting its work into performance. That pursuit remains particularly important at a circuit such as Monza, where Ferrari continues to bring technical developments designed to extract more from the SF-26, including its latest performance push for the Italian Grand Prix.

Between those two worlds stands Michael Schumacher and a legacy that belongs not only to Ferrari’s memories, but also to the way the Scuderia continues to approach its work.
