Ferrari is reportedly preparing a special SF-26 livery for the 2026 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, with the design set to pay tribute to Michael Schumacher and the beginning of the German champion’s historic adventure with the Maranello team. The new look is expected to draw inspiration from Ferrari’s 1996 Formula 1 car, marking 30 years since Michael Schumacher joined the Scuderia.
Monza has increasingly become an opportunity for Ferrari to combine its home Grand Prix with visual references to important moments from its history. The 2026 design would continue a tradition that has been established over the past few seasons, while also adding another significant element to a weekend in which Ferrari is already preparing an important technical step for the SF-26 at Monza.
Ferrari special Monza liveries have become a recent tradition
Since 2022, Ferrari has arrived at the Italian Grand Prix with a series of special liveries designed to celebrate important chapters in the company’s racing history. In 2022, Modena yellow appeared on the engine cover and on the drivers’ race suits to mark Ferrari’s 75th anniversary.
The following year, the Scuderia celebrated its Le Mans victory in the World Endurance Championship. Ferrari then introduced a smaller number of carbon-inspired details in 2024, before using the 2025 Italian Grand Prix to pay tribute to the legendary 312 T with which Niki Lauda won the 1975 Formula 1 World Championship.
For 2026, the focus is expected to shift towards one of the most important drivers in Ferrari history: Michael Schumacher.
Michael Schumacher’s 1996 Ferrari inspires planned SF-26 livery
According to AutoRacer.it, Ferrari is preparing a special livery for the Italian Grand Prix that will specifically reference the car from the 1996 season, the year Michael Schumacher began his career at Maranello.
The intention is reportedly to reproduce some of the most recognisable aesthetic elements of that Ferrari, particularly the combination of red and black along with gold-coloured wheel rims. However, the design would be adapted to the very different graphical and commercial requirements of a modern Formula 1 car.
Rather than a faithful replica of the 1996 design, the SF-26 would therefore feature a contemporary interpretation of the colour scheme and visual identity associated with Michael Schumacher’s first Ferrari season.

The choice of 1996 carries major symbolic importance for Ferrari. That season did not immediately deliver the sustained success that would later define the partnership, but it marked the beginning of a long-term project that eventually transformed the Scuderia into Formula 1’s dominant reference point.
Why 1996 remains such an important year in Ferrari history
Michael Schumacher’s arrival at Maranello began a project that would require several seasons to reach its full potential. Ferrari did not immediately turn into the dominant force that would later collect championships and rewrite records, but the foundations of that successful era were laid during those early years.
With Michael Schumacher at the centre of that project, Ferrari eventually established one of the most successful periods in Formula 1 history. The significance of that relationship remains deeply rooted in the identity of the Scuderia, which continues to celebrate the German champion’s contribution decades later. ScuderiaFans has also previously looked back at Michael Schumacher’s lasting Ferrari legacy.

Thirty years have now passed since Michael Schumacher began his Ferrari adventure, making the 2026 Italian Grand Prix an especially appropriate moment to celebrate the symbolic importance of that starting point.
Monza provides the perfect setting for Ferrari tribute
The relationship between Ferrari and Monza gives the planned tribute additional significance. The Italian Grand Prix is one of the most important weekends of the season for the Maranello team and its supporters, making it a natural stage for a design connected so closely to the Scuderia’s history.
The race is also a central part of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, and Ferrari will arrive at its home event attempting to keep its championship ambitions alive during a crucial phase of the season.
If the special livery is confirmed, the SF-26 is therefore expected to combine modern Ferrari branding with some of the defining visual cues of Michael Schumacher’s 1996 car. The red-and-black theme and gold wheels would provide a direct connection to the beginning of an era that ultimately produced years of victories, championships and some of the most memorable moments in Ferrari’s Formula 1 history.
