Patrick Dempsey imagines Formula 1 drivers as doctors
Sometimes all it takes is a simple game to reveal a completely different side of the Formula 1 paddock. Patrick Dempsey, balancing life between movie sets and race circuits, recently entertained himself by imagining Formula 1 drivers far away from the track and instead immersed in a world made of white coats, hospital corridors and operating rooms.
It was a light-hearted and almost improvised exercise, but one that somehow ended up revealing something deeper without ever openly trying to do so.
A pediatrician, a dentist and a veterinarian on the Formula 1 grid
In Dempsey’s parallel universe, Max Verstappen immediately becomes a pediatrician:
“He’s really kind and he loves children. He has always been very sweet with them… Pediatrician. Yes, that’s exactly what he would be.”
Then came Charles Leclerc, whom Dempsey imagined somewhere between physiotherapy and chiropractic work: “He would probably be someone in physiotherapy, like a chiropractor.”
Lando Norris, meanwhile, seemed to leave Dempsey undecided between two very different medical careers: “Lando Norris is kind of like a dentist… or a plastic surgeon.”
Finally, Oscar Piastri instantly became a veterinarian in Dempsey’s mind: “He would be a veterinarian. Oh, yes.”
Surgeons, students and future possibilities
When discussing Alex Albon, Dempsey appeared to have absolutely no doubts: “He would be a surgeon. He would definitely be a surgeon.”
And when it came time to describe the youngest name on the Formula 1 grid, Kimi Antonelli, the tone of the conversation shifted slightly: “He would be attending medical school. He would be taking the entrance exam. Right now, he would be an intern.”
The game itself is simple, almost childlike in its spontaneity, yet it works because it captures something hidden beneath the helmets and racing suits: Formula 1 drivers possess such clearly defined personalities that it becomes easy to imagine them in completely different worlds.
And so, for a brief moment, Formula 1 transforms into an imaginary hospital where Max Verstappen treats children, Charles Leclerc fixes backs and posture, Lando Norris perfects smiles, Oscar Piastri rescues animals, Albon performs precise surgeries and Antonelli studies to eventually become all of that.
It is a parallel world capable of making people smile, but also one that — as often happens with the best playful ideas — quietly says something truthful without ever needing to explain it directly.
