The Colombian’s opinion
“For now, he has to stay at McLaren. He needs to complete his development path, and even if Ferrari remains a long-term goal, he must achieve the final result. In the meantime, it would be better if he improved his Italian…” This is how Oscar Piastri’s manager Mark Webber – as reported by Paolo Ciccarone on RMC Motori – stirred some controversy during a particularly delicate phase of the World Championship. Juan Pablo Montoya weighed in on the situation, providing his perspective on the growing unrest.
The Colombian emphasized that these market rumors do not seem at all coincidental given what is at stake. In fact, they could be coming from multiple directions with different objectives. “The rumors linking Piastri and Ferrari remind me of those spread by Toto Wolff about the possibility of signing Max Verstappen,” Montoya told Fruity King. “Did he really have the chance to sign Max? We will never know. In the meantime, everyone was talking about it endlessly. The Piastri-Ferrari rumors are perfect for destabilizing the harmony within McLaren and fueling controversy. There could even be Red Bull’s hand behind it.”
“If, on the other hand, the rumors were actually circulated by Oscar Piastri’s entourage, it could be a message aimed at McLaren, intended to ensure that the Australian driver is ‘respected’ in the championship fight during this season finale,” added Montoya. “But this could backfire on Oscar Piastri because, for Andrea Stella, team harmony comes first, and anyone who ‘missteps’ risks facing the consequences. If I were Piastri, I would go to Zak Brown, stressing that these are all media inventions, that neither he nor Webber are talking to anyone, and I would downplay everything in front of the microphones.”
