Oliver Bearman’s rookie campaign in the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship has shown promise, with solid performances that have kept him within touching distance of more experienced competitors. Currently, the young British driver sits just four points behind a Red Bull Racing driver in the championship standings — an encouraging indicator of his potential in the sport’s elite category.
Despite these positive signs, the Ferrari Driver Academy member has faced notable challenges during qualifying sessions. The 19-year-old has struggled to match the pace of his more experienced Haas teammate, Esteban Ocon, in single-lap performance. The current head-to-head qualifying tally stands at 7-4 in Ocon’s favor, and this deficit has had a direct impact on Bearman’s ability to fight for higher positions during Grand Prix Sundays. As a result, Ollie Bearman currently occupies 18th place in the Formula 1 drivers’ standings, while Esteban Ocon sits comfortably in ninth. Nevertheless, Bearman is using this formative year to absorb knowledge and grow with every race weekend.
One of the biggest learning curves for Formula 1 rookies is the Pirelli tyre compounds, which are notoriously complex to manage and particularly punishing for newcomers to the series. Oliver Bearman, like many before him, is still coming to terms with how to extract consistent grip and performance from the tyres over various stints. This factor may be contributing to some of his race-day limitations as he continues to build his understanding of race craft and tyre management.
Adding further significance to his season, the upcoming British Grand Prix at Silverstone will mark Oliver Bearman’s first-ever home race in Formula 1. The event will no doubt carry emotional weight and provide an opportunity for the British rookie to showcase his development in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
In terms of technical performance, the Ferrari junior has played a role in exposing a key shortcoming in Haas’s VF-25 chassis. The British driver has ‘brutally’ highlighted a major flaw in the car’s behavior through long-radius corners, an issue that became especially evident during the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. As a result, the Haas F1 Team has accelerated efforts to address and resolve these handling difficulties, with the hope of improving their mid-corner balance and competitiveness going forward.
Earlier in the season, Bearman made headlines for an audacious move during the Miami Grand Prix sprint race, where he executed a daring double overtake at the start. The manoeuvre left 2009 world champion Jenson Button visibly impressed and served as one of several flashes of Bearman’s natural racing instinct and courage.
Oliver Bearman has also been paying close attention to the seasoned veterans of the sport, particularly Lewis Hamilton. He revealed that he has taken note of the seven-time world champion’s impressive mental strength and raw speed throughout the 2025 season. Speaking in an interview with BBC Sport ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Bearman acknowledged how influential Lewis Hamilton has been in shaping his understanding of what it takes to succeed in Formula 1. He shared that observing Lewis Hamilton’s approach—both mentally and in terms of race pace—has offered key insights that he hopes to integrate into his own driving.
Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu, a long-time figure in the Formula 1 paddock, also drew an interesting comparison between Bearman and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso. According to Komatsu, Oliver Bearman shares an ‘amazing’ attribute with the Spaniard — possibly referring to his adaptability, work ethic, or racing intelligence — traits that can serve as cornerstones for a successful long-term career in Formula 1.
Although Bearman is currently part of the Ferrari Driver Academy, he is well aware that he still has much to prove if he is to eventually secure a full-time seat at the Maranello team. With Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton currently occupying the two race seats, any potential opportunity in Maranello will require Bearman to deliver consistent and outstanding performances. If the long-term plan involves him becoming Lewis Hamilton’s future replacement, he must demonstrate that he is ready to meet the incredibly high standards demanded by the team.
Reflecting on his experience so far, Ollie Bearman noted that the 2025 season has been a significant personal and professional journey. He pointed out the physical demands of Formula 1, identifying neck strength as one of the most critical and challenging aspects of fitness in high-speed races. He singled out the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka as a standout event — both for its technical complexity and the confidence boost it gave him. In a self-deprecating tone, Bearman added that while other British drivers on the grid have performed admirably this season, he jokingly considers himself “the worst” among them, a remark that reflects both humility and a desire to improve.
Regarding his long-term future in the sport, Oliver Bearman is currently under a contract with the Haas Formula 1 Team that guarantees him a race seat at least until the end of the 2026 season, which coincides with the introduction of a brand-new set of technical regulations in Formula 1. Bearman had joined the team despite a relatively underwhelming Formula 2 campaign with PREMA Racing, where he finished 12th in the championship standings. However, his impressive one-off performance for Scuderia Ferrari, stepping in for Carlos Sainz at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix earlier in the season, went a long way in proving his value and convincing Haas to secure his services for the medium term.
What comes after 2026 will likely depend on how Haas adapts to the new rules and whether they can establish themselves as a regular front-running outfit. If the team continues to improve and becomes a consistent points scorer — or even podium contender — Bearman may opt to stay and build his legacy there. However, should a seat at Ferrari become available and his performances merit the promotion, that path remains open as well.
