The Silverstone Grand Prix, valid for round number 12 of the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, will bring the F1 circus to the iconic British setting. The 2025 edition of the British Grand Prix will mark Sir Lewis Hamilton‘s first appearance at Silverstone as a Ferrari driver.
On the historic British track, the two papaya-colored McLaren cars, racing at home on British soil, will battle for the top spot in the championship standings. Behind them, a tight fight is expected among the other top teams. Scuderia Ferrari will attempt to confirm the positive signs shown at the Austrian Grand Prix, as they await further car upgrades scheduled for the upcoming Spa-Francorchamps weekend.
Silverstone GP: History and Characteristics of the F1 Circuit
What does it take to succeed at Silverstone?
Measuring 5.891 kilometers in length, the Northamptonshire track winds through 18 corners—10 to the right and 8 to the left. The circuit has its origins in a former Royal Air Force airfield used during the Second World War.
Over the decades, the British track has undergone several layout changes, yet it has always remained one of the fastest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar. Characterized by sweeping corners and the iconic Maggots-Becketts section, Silverstone is driven with the throttle wide open for 76% of a flying lap. The average lap speed ranks among the highest of the season, sitting around 249 kilometers per hour.
Silverstone: The Birthplace of Formula 1
Silverstone first entered the world of motorsport in 1947, just two years after the end of World War II. This is the track where Formula 1 made its debut in 1950. The British circuit hosted the first race in the 75-year history of the Formula 1 World Championship.
The winner on that historic Saturday, May 13, 1950, was Italian driver Giuseppe “Nino” Farina, behind the wheel of his Alfa Romeo 158. At the end of the season, the Turin-born racer was crowned the first Formula 1 world champion, ahead of Juan Manuel Fangio and Luigi Fagioli.
