Home » Official: Pirelli to introduce new tougher tyre to cope with “extraordinary” advances in car performance

Official: Pirelli to introduce new tougher tyre to cope with “extraordinary” advances in car performance. Pirelli to introduce new tougher tyre amid 'extraordinary' performance gains.

The new specification contains materials that have already been developed for 2024 and will make the tires more durable without affecting other technical parameters. Teams will be able to test them in both FP1 and FP2 of the Spanish GP.

Pirelli confirms new slicks from Silverstone onwards
Formula 1 official tyre supplier Pirelli will introduce a new specification of slick tires starting from the weekend of the British Grand Prix scheduled for July 7-9. The FIA has responded affirmatively to the request of the Milan-based company, under Article 10.8.3 of the Formula 1 Technical Regulations. We had already anticipated this request, which is Pirelli’s response to the increase in performance shown by the 2023 F1 cars compared to their predecessors seen on track last year.

The actual performance improvement in terms of speed and downforce was greater than what was evaluated in pre-season. Teams will be able to test the tires in both FP1 and FP2 for the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

A necessary move
The new specification introduces materials expected for 2024, and the move has become necessary now considering the performances at the beginning of the 2023 Formula 1 championship season and the pre-season simulation data provided by the teams. It is also likely that these performances will further increase during 2023.

Marios Isola’s comments
“We have seen how much more performance the 2023 cars have compared to last year during the first races of this season, thanks to the extraordinary pace of development shown by all 10 teams. In Miami, for example, the pole time was almost two seconds faster than last year, but the same type of progress was also seen during the races,” explained Mario Isola, Motorsport Director of Pirelli.

Two extra sets in FP1 and FP2 at Montmeló
“Pirelli’s simulation work has always aimed not only to provide a product that achieves the performance targets indicated by the interested parties, but also to anticipate any potential problems and react quickly. The new specification contains materials that we have already developed for 2024, which will make the tires more durable without affecting other technical parameters or their behavior on track. To allow all teams to test the new construction on equal terms, Pirelli will provide two extra sets of tires for each car to be used during FP1 and FP2 of the Spanish Grand Prix.” – the official tyre supplier confirmed.
