Just like the teams participating in the Formula 1 world championship, development at Pirelli is also proceeding quickly. So fast that the Italian company has proposed to the FIA to bring forward the debut of the tyres scheduled for the 2014 campaign and introduce them already at Silverstone (July 7-9).
The reason for the request
According to the Dutch news media outlet RacingNews365.com, which reported the information earlier today, the request was prompted by the unexpectedly significant improvement made by the 2023 cars compared to the previous season. The tyres supplied by Pirelli for this year have not experienced any issues, but there was reportedly a sort of precautionary alert in view of some circuits, such as Silverstone, where the lateral loads on the compounds will be among the highest of the season (other tracks with similar characteristics include Spa-Francorchamps, Zandvoort, and Suzuka).
The new technical specifications, which have been reinforced to ensure better performance and safety during use, will be introduced if the proposal made by Pirelli is approved by the World Motor Sport Council, although this is expected to be a mere formality.
Timing is everything
The approval process has already begun, but even though the British Grand Prix still seems quite far away (July 9), we know that Pirelli’s delivery times for European races are eight weeks. Therefore, to see the 2024 tyres in action at Silverstone, the tyre manufacturer must receive the FIA’s approval no later than the upcoming weekend, when the sport will be on track for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
