There was no team strategy at the start of the 2023 F1 Mexican GP for Scuderia Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Contrary to expectations that the Spaniard would act as a “wingman” for his Maranello teammate, it’s the pole-sitter himself who explained the reason.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the Monegasque driver emphasized that the start on this track is often unpredictable. “We’ve seen it in the last four races here. It’s hard to predict.”
For this reason, Charles Leclerc explained how no strategy was decided at the start. “If we can have a good start, and Carlos remains in second, we can have a good race.”
The Ferrari man had hoped to “work well as a team after the first lap,” which did not happen, as we witnessed. “There are too many variables in the first lap,” he concluded.
The Monegasque did not expect chaos at the very first corner. Max Verstappen managed to squeeze between the two Ferraris and, after a brief side-by-side with the pole-sitter, soon took the lead of the race. However, neither Charles Leclerc nor Carlos Sainz expected that the variable, in this case, would be Sergio Pérez.

The Mexican, starting from the fifth position, took a huge risk by battling with Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. He hoped to win, as he justified after retiring in his home Grand Prix. Carlos Sainz managed to steer clear of it, easing off the throttle; otherwise, it could have ended worse. The 2023 Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix ended with the (predictable) victory of Max Verstappen. Second place for Lewis Hamilton, third for Charles Leclerc, who escaped a penalty for unsafe driving due to the damage caused by the contact with Sergio Pérez at the race start.
