Shameful images have emerged from the stands of the Hermanos Rodríguez racetrack, where a brawl erupted between fans of Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez following the Mexican driver’s retirement at the start of the Mexican Grand Prix due to contact with the Monegasque. These scenes certainly do not paint a favorable picture of the sport, confirming the Formula 1’s growing division into factions.
Mexican GP: Brawl Breaks Out in the Stands Between Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez Fans
In the video in question, which is gaining substantial attention on social media, it appears to be a Perez fan who incited the brawl in the stands, throwing several punches at a Ferrari-clad supporter.
Several individuals attempted to intervene between the two, trying to diffuse the altercation. Regardless of who was primarily at fault for the incident between Leclerc and Perez at the start, these scenes are disgraceful and unjustifiable for a sport that has always advocated for respect on and off the track, both towards fans and drivers.
Sergio Perez himself, ahead of the weekend at his home circuit, had urged his fans to behave properly, especially in relation to Max Verstappen. The tension was so high before the race that the Dutchman even had to be accompanied by bodyguards throughout the weekend.
However, no one had foreseen what happened in turn 1, with Checo’s fans already anticipating a podium finish for their favorite driver at the end of the race. Both Leclerc and his fans are blameless, of course. Therefore, a clear stance from Formula 1 is expected regarding this matter.
