Former Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell has expressed strong confidence in Ferrari’s recent development work and believes that Lewis Hamilton could be on course to achieve a historic milestone at the British Grand Prix. The 1992 title winner highlighted the possibility of Lewis Hamilton securing a record-breaking tenth victory at Silverstone — this time at the wheel of a Ferrari — a scenario that would mark one of the most iconic moments in modern Formula 1 history.
Ferrari’s progress over the winter has not gone unnoticed within the paddock. The Maranello-based team has made clear steps forward with the SF-26 project, and the increased involvement of Lewis Hamilton in the car’s development has played a significant role. Compared to his first season in red, Lewis Hamilton now appears far more comfortable and confident, a factor that has already translated into stronger performances on track.
In the opening races of the 2026 Formula 1 season, there have been clear signs of this evolution. Lewis Hamilton has shown a much more competitive approach, engaging in direct battles with Charles Leclerc and demonstrating a renewed level of determination. This internal competition within Ferrari has also contributed to raising the overall performance level of the team, with both drivers pushing each other to extract maximum potential from the SF-26.
Silverstone emerges as a potential defining moment for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton
After securing his first podium with Ferrari, attention is now shifting toward the possibility of a race victory — particularly at Silverstone. The British Grand Prix represents a unique opportunity for Lewis Hamilton, not only because of the home support but also due to the historical significance of a potential tenth win at the circuit.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Nigel Mansell suggested that the Briton has rediscovered his motivation and competitive edge, noting that the seven-time world champion appears fully energized at this stage of his career. He also acknowledged that Ferrari had done an excellent job during the winter development phase, bringing the team closer to the front of the grid, even if Mercedes currently holds a slight advantage. In addition, he indicated that McLaren should also be considered a serious contender in the fight at the front.
According to Nigel Mansell, the competitive landscape is expected to become even tighter by the time the championship reaches Silverstone, especially with regulatory adjustments potentially influencing performance. He anticipated a highly competitive race, with multiple drivers capable of fighting for victory, suggesting that as many as six or seven contenders could realistically challenge for the top step of the podium.
Ferrari progress encouraging, but Mercedes remains the benchmark
Despite the clear improvement shown by Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton compared to the 2025 season, the overall competitiveness of the SF-26 will remain a decisive factor. Beating Mercedes consistently is still a complex challenge, particularly given the strength and consistency shown by the Brackley team in the early part of the season.
Furthermore, the competitive picture is not limited to a two-team battle. McLaren’s performance trajectory suggests that it could play a significant role in shaping the outcome of key races, adding another layer of uncertainty to the championship fight.
A clearer understanding of Ferrari’s true potential is expected to emerge following the April break, when teams introduce further updates and refine their packages. Until then, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will need to maximize every opportunity, as the margins at the front of the grid remain extremely tight.
If Ferrari can continue its upward trajectory and deliver a car capable of consistently challenging at the front, Silverstone could become the stage for a historic achievement. For Lewis Hamilton, a victory there in Ferrari colors would not only represent a personal milestone but also a defining moment in the team’s modern Formula 1 era.
