Not just Brad Pitt — two more major stars turn their attention to Formula 1
Another film set in the Formula 1 paddock is on the way
Formula 1 is once again preparing to take center stage in a major Hollywood production — and this time, it is not (at least for now) the yet-to-be-announced sequel to F1 The Movie, the recent Oscar-winning film starring Brad Pitt. Instead, the next big project linked to the world of Grand Prix racing could be a prequel to the Ocean’s saga, the iconic film series from the 2000s centered around the sophisticated master thief Danny Ocean, famously portrayed by George Clooney.
Unlike the original trilogy, this new film will not be set in the present day, but will instead take audiences back to the 1960s. The story will focus on the parents of Danny Ocean — the very figures who shaped the skills and mindset of the legendary con artist who once orchestrated daring heists in Las Vegas in Ocean’s Eleven.
What does Formula 1 have to do with it?
Formula 1 will play a key role in the storyline — far from being a simple background element. In fact, the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix will serve as the setting for the central heist carried out by the film’s protagonists, played by Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. The duo will be involved in what promises to be a spectacular and high-stakes robbery, blending the glamour of Monte Carlo with the intensity of Grand Prix racing.
The film, titled Oceans, will be produced by Warner Bros and is currently scheduled for release in 2027. Bradley Cooper is also expected to take on directing duties following the departure of previous directors Lee Isaac Chung and Jay Roach during the production process.
Margot Robbie confirms the Monaco setting
The confirmation of Formula 1’s involvement — and specifically the Monaco Grand Prix setting — came directly from co-star and executive producer Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Barbie, Wuthering Heights) during CinemaCon, currently taking place in Las Vegas.
“Before Danny Ocean ever set foot in Las Vegas,” Robbie explained, as reported by Variety, “two brilliant minds taught him everything he knows… his parents. You will see them in their prime and, in our new film, as they pull off an epic heist at the 1962 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.”
The 1962 Monaco Grand Prix
Oceans will not be the only upcoming addition to the Ocean’s cinematic universe, as George Clooney is also reportedly working on a fourth installment set in the modern day. Meanwhile, the historical backdrop chosen for this prequel adds a layer of authenticity and nostalgia to the project.
The 1962 Monaco Grand Prix took place on Sunday, June 3, and was won by Bruce McLaren driving for Cooper Climax. He finished ahead of the two Ferraris of reigning world champion Phil Hill and Lorenzo Bandini, while Jim Clark had secured pole position the day before.
It remains unclear how central the Formula 1 setting will be to the overall narrative, or whether it will serve primarily as a backdrop to the story. Likewise, there has been no confirmation yet on whether actors will portray real-life drivers or other historical figures from that era of the sport.
