The love of Ferrari fans for Charles Leclerc is overwhelming, even though he has not yet managed to bring the world title back to Maranello. It is a story that repeats itself for the Scuderia: we saw it with Jean Alesi and even more with Gilles Villeneuve, the Canadian who thrilled the crowds and kept his memory alive more than 40 years after his tragic passing.
Charles Leclerc has often been compared to Villeneuve, but not everyone agrees with the similarities between two drivers who clearly belonged to very different eras. Among those is Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who pointed out a detail that he considers very important in distinguishing Charles from Gilles.
Leclerc deserves the World Championship
“It is clear that Leclerc is a very talented driver. But he too is seeing the years go by, even if he is still very young, and he is witnessing the rise of the new generation, the Piastris, the Norrises, who are winning, and I understand that there is a certain frustration in not having a winning car. Villeneuve was something else. I never worked with Gilles, but he was not a driver with whom you could win the World Championship. He had a temperament that could allow him to win many races, but then he would make mistakes and push too far,” said the former Ferrari president to Sky Sport during the world premiere of ‘Luca: Seeing Red’, the documentary dedicated to his life.
“Leclerc today, with a car that is not competitive, is forced to push from the first to the last lap: he is a great driver, but he needs a car that finally puts him in the condition to win because he deserves it.”
