Well-known journalist Joe Saward recently suggested that the Monaco Grand Prix could be removed from the Formula 1 calendar, but the president of the Automobile Club de Monaco has confirmed that the event is not in immediate danger.
Formula 1 fans are split regarding probably the best-known Grand Prix in the world. Many appreciate it for the luxury, glamour, amazing scenery and even the difficulties of such an unique street track, while others profoundly dislike it due to the fact that many races tend to be rather dull processions, without passing opportunities or notable track action.
There have even been reports that the Monaco Grand Prix’s future on the Formula 1 calendar may be in question given the interest that many venues have shown in the last few years, as new promoters are expressing their desire to stage grands prix. Formula 1 CEo Stefano Domenicali recently confirmed that there is enough interest to stage up to 30 events in one year if Formula 1 would want to.
Locations like Monaco and Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, which are part of Formula 1’s tradition, have been reported to be under threat and may even have been considered as candidates for rotation on and off the calendar if such a process materialises. However, Monaco Automobile Club president Michel Boeri has clarified that Monaco is safe for the time being and also confirmed there are ongoing discussions for a new contract to be signed.

“It was suggested Liberty Media’s demands were too excessive for Monaco and the grand prix would no longer be held” – ACM president Michel Boeri said, as reported by French magazine Auto Hebdo – “That’s not true. We are still in talks with them and we must now make it concrete by signing a contract. I can guarantee you that after 2022, the grand prix will continue to take place. I don’t know if the contract will be for three or five years, but that’s a detail.” – Monaco Automobile Club president Michel Boeri concluded.
