Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz says Formula 1 needs to find a solution in order for the historic European events not to completely from the Formula 1 calendar and feels that the sport should introduce a rotating calendar for the future, as several F1 events would take place in every two or three years.
Formula 1’s popularity has significantly increased in the last few years which has led to many new locations and venues interested in joining the World Championship. In 2021, Formula 1 confirmed that it would be going to Miami starting with this season, while from the next one, the sport will have a Saturday night race in Las Vegas. At the same time, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have also signed long-term contracts to secure their place on the calendar.
F1’s Concorde Agreement states that a maximum of 24 events can be held during a season, which means that some of the current races will have to be removed in order for the new venues to be added.
Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz know that “business is business” is the financial aspect is a key factor for any decision, but at the same time, the Spaniard has warned against seeing historic European races disappear forever from the schedule:

“I think there needs to be a limit for the number of races that we keep adding, so in the end some other races are going to pay the price of having to stay out. Obviously [I’m a] big fan of having to go to Miami and Vegas, but at the same time, [it’s a] big loss having to lose classic European races, I think. Hopefully for the future we can find a compromise where maybe races that cannot afford to be in the calendar every year, year-in, year-out, can be in the calendar once every two years, once every three years. And we keep coming back to the places that we’ve always been. Business is business. Liberty and Formula 1 will look at what they have to do, I guess, for business. But I wouldn’t like to stop racing in Europe. I think it’s a great place to go racing, it’s where our heritage is and I think we need to keep coming back, even if it’s not every single year, but at least keep it on the calendar.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz explained.
