Despite some rumours regarding the possibility of Mick Schumacher signing for Mercedes, in January 2019 Michael Schumacher’s son joined the Ferrari Driver Academy, hoping to replicate the legendary duo between his father Michael and the Maranello team in Formula 1. After a first season of learning in Formula 2, Mick managed to win the title in the junior category and, thanks to the support of Ferrari, to secure a seat in the Haas team in the premier category auto racing. In the weakest team on the grid, the young German has not had a great chance to show his abilities so far, if not in the strong defense put on the track against Max Verstappen in Hungary.
The most reliable comparison is therefore the one with his teammate Nikita Mazepin, and Mick Schumacher is currently leading with a double 10-2 in qualifying and in the race. Having ruled out the hypothesis of a move to Alfa Romeo for 2022, Mick will also continue next season in Haas, with the team headed by Gunther Steiner intending to confirm the current pair of drivers.
According to the information gathered by the British journalist Joe Saward, Ferrari is keeping an eye on Mick Schumacher, so much so that a possible promotion to the Maranello team in 2023 is not excluded: “Mick in recent years has signed a long-term agreement with Ferrari, a contract that is currently being renegotiated and which could also be announced in Monza. If Schumacher does well in 2022 with Haas, Mick could (but it is not a certainty) replace Carlos Sainz in 2023. Clearly there is a big “if”, also because Carlos is doing a good job. But this seems to be the most likely scenario”. – he explained.
Carlos Sainz’s current contract with Scuderia Ferrari – lasting two years – expires at the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, while the contract of Charles Leclerc extends until 2024.
