Speculation surrounding Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 future continues to intensify, with fresh reports suggesting Ferrari have entered the list of teams exploring a possible deal with the reigning world champion. Although any move to Maranello would not be expected before the 2028 season, the latest developments indicate that Verstappen’s management is carefully evaluating every available option beyond 2026.
After another frustrating weekend at the British Grand Prix, uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term future has only grown. The Red Bull driver endured his third retirement of the season, a result that further damaged his championship ambitions and fueled renewed speculation over whether he will remain with the Milton Keynes-based team under Formula 1’s new regulatory era.
With the introduction of the all-new technical regulations approaching, several leading teams are expected to reshape their long-term driver line-ups, and Max Verstappen remains the most sought-after name on the market despite still being under contract with Red Bull.
Red Bull contract no longer guarantees Verstappen’s future
Although Max Verstappen’s current agreement with Red Bull officially runs until the end of the 2028 Formula 1 season, the situation is far more complicated than the contract alone suggests.
Various reports indicate that performance-related clauses could allow the Dutch driver to activate an exit option under certain circumstances. Following the British Grand Prix, it is now mathematically impossible for Max Verstappen to occupy one of the top two positions in the Drivers’ Championship before the summer break, a scenario that has once again brought those contractual provisions into the spotlight.
The frustration displayed by the Dutchman after retiring at Silverstone only added to the speculation. The four-time world champion openly expressed his dissatisfaction following the race, with concerns reportedly extending beyond the RB22’s competitiveness to Formula 1’s upcoming regulations as well.
For Red Bull, retaining its star driver remains the absolute priority. After investing heavily in Max Verstappen throughout his career and building the team around him, senior management are understood to be seeking greater clarity regarding his long-term commitment before preparations for the next generation of Formula 1 cars accelerate.
Ferrari reportedly among the teams holding discussions
According to reports, Max Verstappen’s representatives are maintaining conversations with several leading Formula 1 teams while assessing the driver’s future beyond the current regulations.
His management team, led by Raymond Vermeulen and supported by father Jos Verstappen, is reportedly evaluating every possible scenario before any long-term decision is made.
Mercedes have consistently been mentioned as one of the strongest candidates should Max Verstappen eventually leave Red Bull. Meanwhile, McLaren has also emerged as a possible destination after reports suggested preliminary discussions took place during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.
Now, according to BBC Sport, Ferrari have also become part of those long-term conversations, joining Red Bull, Mercedes and McLaren among the teams linked with the Dutch driver.
At this stage, however, there is no suggestion that an agreement is close. Instead, the reported contacts appear to reflect the natural process of exploring future possibilities in an increasingly competitive driver market.
Why a Ferrari move would almost certainly have to wait
Despite the excitement generated by the reports, several significant obstacles make an immediate move to Ferrari highly unlikely.
Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur have both publicly confirmed that the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion will continue racing for the Scuderia in 2027. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc recently committed his future to Ferrari with a long-term contract, firmly establishing himself as one of the team’s central figures for the coming years.
With Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both expected to remain at Maranello throughout the 2027 campaign, Ferrari simply have no vacancy available in the short term.
Attention therefore naturally shifts toward 2028. Lewis Hamilton’s current agreement with the Maranello team reportedly includes an option covering that season, meaning any major change to the team’s driver line-up would most likely become possible only after both parties evaluate their future at the conclusion of the 2027 campaign.
If Ferrari were eventually to pursue Max Verstappen, 2028 appears to be the earliest realistic opportunity under the current contractual landscape.
McLaren may represent Verstappen’s most immediate alternative
Should Max Verstappen decide that he wants to leave Red Bull before 2028 while remaining in Formula 1, several observers believe McLaren currently represents the most realistic alternative.
Reports have suggested uncertainty surrounding Oscar Piastri’s long-term future, potentially creating an opportunity should McLaren decide to completely reshape its driver pairing under Formula 1’s new regulations.
Mercedes, meanwhile, appear increasingly committed to their current line-up. Andrea Kimi Antonelli is viewed as a cornerstone of the team’s future project, while George Russell has recently indicated that his own future is secure heading into 2027.
Those circumstances make a direct move to Mercedes appear considerably more complicated than it once seemed, although Formula 1’s driver market has repeatedly demonstrated that unexpected opportunities can emerge very quickly.
Formula 1’s next driver market battle is already underway
While much of the attention remains focused on the ongoing championship fight, discussions behind the scenes are already shaping the future of Formula 1 beyond the current season.
Max Verstappen remains the sport’s biggest transfer target, and it is hardly surprising that multiple manufacturers and leading teams are exploring whether an opportunity might eventually arise to secure the services of a four-time world champion.
For Ferrari, retaining Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc remains the immediate priority as the Scuderia continues its pursuit of championship success. Nevertheless, like every leading team, Ferrari must also think several years ahead, ensuring it is prepared for every possible scenario in one of Formula 1’s most competitive driver markets.
Whether Max Verstappen ultimately remains with Red Bull, joins another front-running team or even steps away from Formula 1 altogether remains impossible to predict at this stage. What appears increasingly clear, however, is that conversations about the Dutch driver’s future are already taking place across the paddock, with Ferrari now reportedly among the teams monitoring one of the sport’s biggest long-term opportunities.
