Lewis Hamilton may have fallen short of securing a dream victory at his home Grand Prix, but his conduct after the checkered flag left a lasting impression on former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, who believes the Ferrari star demonstrated the qualities that have defined his career both on and off the circuit.
The British Grand Prix ultimately belonged to Charles Leclerc, who delivered an outstanding performance to claim victory for Ferrari ahead of George Russell and teammate Lewis Hamilton. While the result marked a major milestone for Charles Leclerc and the Scuderia, the race also left Lewis Hamilton wondering what might have been after a sequence of events denied him the opportunity to fight for second place in the closing stages.
The final laps at Silverstone became one of the biggest talking points of the weekend after Max Verstappen’s incident triggered a Safety Car intervention. Initially, official timing screens indicated that the Safety Car would return to the pit lane with one lap remaining, seemingly setting up a dramatic sprint to the finish.
Instead, what was later described as a software-related communication issue resulted in the Safety Car remaining on track until the checkered flag. The decision prevented any final-lap racing and effectively froze the order, leaving many fans disappointed after anticipating one last battle between the leading drivers.
For Lewis Hamilton, the timing proved particularly frustrating. Ferrari had brought the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion into the pits during the Safety Car period, a strategy that left him surrendering second place to George Russell. Had the race restarted as initially expected, Lewis Hamilton would have had the advantage of fresher tyres and an opportunity to attack during the final lap.
David Coulthard impressed by Lewis Hamilton’s attitude
Although Lewis Hamilton had every reason to feel frustrated after missing out on a stronger result at his home race, David Coulthard believes the Ferrari driver responded with remarkable maturity.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, the former Williams, McLaren and Red Bull driver explained that what impressed him most was not what Lewis Hamilton achieved on track, but rather how he behaved once the race was over.
According to David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton genuinely appeared pleased to see Charles Leclerc and Ferrari celebrating victory instead of focusing on his own disappointment. Rather than searching for excuses or publicly criticizing the circumstances that compromised his race, the British driver accepted the outcome with the professionalism expected from one of Formula 1’s most accomplished competitors.
David Coulthard suggested that this reaction reflected the same composure the British driver displayed following the dramatic conclusion of the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi. Despite suffering one of the most painful defeats of his career, The Briton congratulated Max Verstappen after the race, an example of sportsmanship that David Coulthard believes continues to define the Ferrari driver today.
In David Coulthard’s view, Lewis Hamilton once again demonstrated grace under pressure, choosing to celebrate Ferrari’s success instead of allowing personal disappointment to overshadow the team’s achievement. For the former Grand Prix winner, that attitude was one of the most positive stories to emerge from the Silverstone weekend.
Charles Leclerc found the answer without changing his identity
While Lewis Hamilton received praise for his conduct after the race, Charles Leclerc enjoyed one of his strongest weekends of the 2026 Formula 1 season by returning to the top step of the podium.
The victory was particularly significant after several difficult races in which Charles Leclerc had struggled to match the pace of Lewis Hamilton. Throughout that period, questions had been raised about whether the Monegasque should adapt his approach behind the wheel in order to extract more performance from the Ferrari SF-26.
Reflecting on the turnaround, Charles Leclerc admitted that he had seriously considered modifying his driving style after seeing how effectively the seven-time world champion had adapted to the characteristics of the Ferrari.
However, instead of copying his teammate completely, Charles Leclerc decided to remain faithful to his natural driving technique while working with Ferrari’s engineers to adapt the car around his own preferences. The strategy ultimately paid off, allowing him to rediscover the confidence that had been missing in recent races and convert that improved feeling into a dominant victory.
Charles Leclerc explained after the race that he had faced two possible approaches. One option was to reshape his driving style to resemble that of Lewis Hamilton, whose technique had recently been delivering encouraging results. The alternative was to continue driving in his usual manner while searching for setup solutions that better suited his strengths. Charles Leclerc said he chose the second route, and the outcome at Silverstone justified that decision.
Ferrari heads to Spa with renewed confidence
The British Grand Prix provided Ferrari with plenty of encouragement despite Lewis Hamilton narrowly missing out on second place. Charles Leclerc’s victory demonstrated the competitiveness of the SF-26, while Lewis Hamilton’s pace in the latter stages of the race suggested that, under different circumstances, Ferrari could easily have celebrated a one-two finish.
With confidence restored and momentum beginning to build, Ferrari will now shift its attention to the next round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship at Spa-Francorchamps. The Belgian Grand Prix will provide another important opportunity for both Charles Leclerc and his Maranello teammate to continue Ferrari’s resurgence and strengthen the team’s challenge at the front of the field.
