Charles Leclerc returns to winning ways with dramatic British Grand Prix victory
The ninth round of the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship delivered plenty of drama at Silverstone, where Charles Leclerc ended Ferrari’s wait for victory with a commanding drive that was ultimately sealed by late heartbreak for championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
The race had all the ingredients for a classic. Antonelli arrived looking to strengthen his title challenge, Ferrari aimed to repeat its success from Barcelona by using both cars strategically, George Russell hoped to shine in front of his home crowd, McLaren wanted a strong result at Silverstone, and Max Verstappen was eager to bounce back after qualifying behind Isack Hadjar.
For the opening stint of the 52-lap race, every driver opted for the medium (C2) tyre compound.
Ferrari makes the perfect start
When the lights went out, Antonelli made a poor getaway, allowing Ferrari to seize the initiative immediately. Charles Leclerc swept into the lead ahead of Lewis Hamilton, followed by Antonelli, George Russell, Isack Hadjar, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Liam Lawson, Arvid Lindblad and Carlos Sainz.
Antonelli wasted no time applying pressure to Hamilton, while Oscar Piastri was forced into the pits early to replace a damaged front wing. Behind them, Verstappen overtook Hadjar to move into fifth place.
Leclerc quickly established an impressive rhythm, stretching his advantage over Hamilton to 2.4 seconds by lap seven. However, Ferrari’s race became more complicated when Hamilton received a five-second penalty for a false start after his SF-26 rolled slightly forward as he engaged first gear before the lights went out.
Antonelli closes in as strategy comes into play
On lap 11, Antonelli overtook Hamilton and immediately began chasing Leclerc. Despite the pressure, the Ferrari driver maintained his composure and continued to control the race, leading by 4.3 seconds at lap 14 before gradually extending the gap to almost five seconds.
Meanwhile, Verstappen passed Russell before making his pit stop and rejoined in seventh place behind Norris. Hadjar stopped on lap 20, while the leaders continued to extend their opening stints.
A Virtual Safety Car was deployed on lap 22 after an umbrella was blown onto the circuit, although the interruption lasted for less than one lap before racing resumed.
Hamilton made his pit stop on lap 25, serving his five-second penalty before switching tyres. Russell stopped on the same lap and emerged ahead of the Ferrari driver, with both rejoining behind Verstappen. At the front, Antonelli had reduced Leclerc’s lead to just 2.4 seconds.
Leclerc responded by pitting at the end of lap 25, fitting the hard compound before rejoining in second place. Hamilton immediately set the fastest lap on fresh tyres and began attacking Russell. The pair soon caught Verstappen, while Norris also made his pit stop.
Hamilton and Russell produce an unforgettable battle
One of the highlights of the race came shortly after the pit stops, as Hamilton and Russell fought fiercely for fourth place.
Hamilton initially completed the overtake, only for Russell to fight back immediately. The two British drivers exchanged positions several times in a spectacular display of wheel-to-wheel racing that continued through lap 32.
Just ahead of them, Verstappen remained within reach, creating an exciting three-way battle separated by only a few tenths of a second.
Late drama changes everything
Antonelli delayed his second pit stop until lap 35 before switching to the hard tyres and rejoining in second place, 7.4 seconds behind Leclerc. The Italian quickly began reducing the gap, setting the fastest lap of the race with a 1:31.777 as he looked increasingly capable of challenging for victory.
Hamilton, meanwhile, finally overtook Verstappen on lap 38, while another Virtual Safety Car was triggered after Nico Hulkenberg stopped on track. Verstappen, Hadjar and Norris all used the neutralisation to make additional pit stops before racing resumed almost immediately.
The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages. Antonelli suddenly slowed with an apparent mechanical issue, ending his hopes of victory and handing Ferrari a golden opportunity. With just ten laps remaining, Charles Leclerc led Lewis Hamilton to give Ferrari a remarkable one-two.
The Mercedes driver dropped rapidly down the order as what appeared to be a suspension problem worsened. Antonelli eventually continued but fell outside the leading positions.
Further drama unfolded when George Russell overtook Verstappen on lap 48, with the Red Bull driver running wide at Stowe. A late Safety Car then neutralised the race after several incidents, setting up a tense finish.
However, the Safety Car remained on track until the chequered flag, preventing any final-lap showdown. Charles Leclerc crossed the finish line to secure his first Formula 1 victory in two years, while George Russell finished second and Lewis Hamilton completed the podium for Ferrari.
