Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen has expressed confidence that Lewis Hamilton could emerge as a genuine title contender with Scuderia Ferrari in the upcoming Formula 1 campaign.
The British driver is set to close an illustrious chapter with Mercedes, a partnership that has spanned 12 seasons and yielded extraordinary success, including eight constructors’ championships and six drivers’ titles. Following the conclusion of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion will embark on a new journey with Ferrari, one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams.
Max Verstappen, whose rise to dominance with Red Bull ended Mercedes’ era of supremacy, played a pivotal role in the shift of power. The Dutch driver famously secured his first championship in a controversial and unforgettable showdown with Hamilton during the final race of the 2021 Formula 1 championship, marking the end of an unprecedented streak for the Silver Arrows.
“They were the established force. They had won so much and for us we came in, we wanted to try and be better,” the Dutch driver explained in a recent interview for The Mirror. “We were trying to match them and to have that year in 2021 I think was really cool.” – he added – “A lot of pressure, a lot of tense moments between the teams but of course I think it was a great rivalry at the time with two amazing teams going up against each other. That’s something that I will always appreciate.”
Although Lewis Hamilton has secured two victories this season, the latter half of the year has been challenging for the seven-time champion. As his time with Mercedes draws to a close, Lewis Hamilton faces the prospect of finishing behind team-mate George Russell in both qualifying battles and the championship standings, casting a shadow over his otherwise stellar tenure with the team.
Max Verstappen, who has often been Lewis Hamilton’s fiercest rival, has addressed growing speculation about the Briton’s recent performances and whether they signal a decline as he prepares for a fresh chapter with Scuderia Ferrari.
Asked whether he believes Lewis Hamilton has what it takes to fight for a title in the red car next Formula 1 season, the Dutchman offered his perspective, responding: “It’s difficult to say” – the Red Bull man pointed out – “It all depends on how competitive Ferrari are as well. I do feel that when Lewis has a good car he gets more motivated naturally. That’s how it is. Maybe it’s good for him to have a little switch of scenery and new motivation because I don’t think he will ever lose it. It’s just how you use it. I think it’s still going to be a very competitive season. A lot can happen. For us as well, it’s very unknown how competitive we are going to be against each other right now but that makes it also very exciting once you know the cars are ready.” – the four-time F1 world champion concluded.
