Former Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene believes the Scuderia’s impressive victory at the British Grand Prix was no coincidence, arguing that the team’s recent aerodynamic progress has allowed it to outperform Mercedes on circuits where downforce is the deciding factor.
A memorable Sunday for Ferrari fans
“Winning at their home is always something special,” Maurizio Arrivabene said while appearing on Sky’s post-race analysis programme Race Anatomy following Ferrari’s triumph at Silverstone.
The Italian manager knows better than most what it means to beat Mercedes on home soil. He was Ferrari’s team principal when Sebastian Vettel claimed victory at Silverstone in 2018, the race that produced the now-famous team radio message: “At their home.”
Heading into the 2026 British Grand Prix, Ferrari had been expected to spend the weekend on the defensive. Instead, the Scuderia from Maranello set the pace from Friday onwards and, with a little fortune on its side, eventually emerged victorious over Mercedes, whose race was once again compromised by a technical issue on Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s car.
Ferrari’s aerodynamic gains impress Maurizio Arrivabene
Maurizio Arrivabene believes Silverstone perfectly showcased Ferrari’s recent progress, particularly in aerodynamic performance, while acknowledging that Mercedes still holds the upper hand when it comes to engine power.
“Ferrari’s performance at Silverstone doesn’t surprise me,” Arrivabene said. “It’s an aerodynamics circuit, which means Ferrari has made significant progress in that area. When it comes to the engine, Mercedes are stronger. It’s a great battle.”
That battle will resume in just two weeks’ time at another legendary venue, Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The Belgian Grand Prix is already shaping up to be a pivotal weekend, with the championship standings becoming increasingly competitive. Andrea Kimi Antonelli, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are separated by just 32 points, while Charles Leclerc sits 71 points behind the championship leader.
