Scuderia Ferrari had a very difficult Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps and things barely improved seven days later at the Zandvoort circuit. Now the Maranello team is looking for answers in its home race, at the Monza circuit. It is unlikely that these will be positive answers, considering the clear top speed advantage enjoyed by Red Bull at the moment, but the support of the Tifosi, the desire to fight back and celebrate on the occasion of Monza’s centenary will certainly give an extra boost to the Maranello men.
Ferrari’s last win at the Temple of Speed was taken by Charles Leclerc in 2019, when the Monegasque driver finished ahead of the Mercedes cars of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. That remains Scuderia Ferrari’s only victory in the last 11 races which took place at Monza.
Mattia Binotto previews the Italian Grand Prix: “This track has a unique layout in the calendar: it is a very fast track, the only one of this kind left on the calendar, and for this reason it is particularly demanding for engines and cars. It is a track on which the power unit pushes at maximum for four fifths of the lap and that is why it is essential to be perfect. The race is a sprint: the 53 laps slip away at a very fast pace, so even the drivers are not allowed any mistakes, because they risk not having time to recover.” – the Ferrari team principal explained ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
But what are the prospects that the Ferrari fans should have for this weekend? “Monza, which by the way turns 100 this year and is an icon in the world of motorsport, is something special for all Italian teams and especially for us, but it is for all of Formula 1. One of the reasons why all the teams are happy to come here are the fans. The fans are demanding, competent and wild. For me, the invasion of the track, personally experienced from the pit wall when Charles won in 2019, remains unforgettable. They offer us all their love, they support us even when things do not go the right way and push us to do better and better. Having them around, under the podium, is already an emotion in itself. We will do everything to give our fans some beautiful moments this weekend.” – Mattia Binotto concluded.
