The people who are currently in Michael Schumacher’s inner circle, in addition to his family, can be counted on one hand: Sabine Kehm, Jean Todt, and Luca Cordero di Montezemolo are among them, and among the few who have had contact with the German champion after his tragic accident in Meribel ten years ago. And, out of respect for the former Ferrari and Formula 1 driver, even in interviews over the years, they have never speculated on his health conditions and have maintained the utmost confidentiality, faithful to Corinna and the family’s requests.
In a recent interview for the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the former CEO of Ferrari spoke about the Ferrari legend but from a different perspective: that of the man before the driver. The highest praise came when asked what Enzo Ferrari would have thought of the German. “He would have been enthusiastic about him. Because he liked drivers who always pushed. And his attachment to the mechanics would have positively impressed him. Even when he broke a leg at Silverstone due to a failure, he never said a word against the team. And he could have.” – the former Chairman of Ferrari pointed out in his recent interview for the Italian media.
The journalist then asked Luca Cordero di Montezemolo if there are really similarities between Michael Schumacher and Charles Leclerc, as many claim. “Charles is a different driver, formidable in qualifying. Ferrari is right to bet on him; I wouldn’t be happy to see Charles Leclerc as an opponent. But he needs a team and a car that put him in a position to win,” concluded Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.
