Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari was always expected to become one of the defining stories of modern Formula 1. The arrival of the sport’s most successful driver at its most iconic team created expectations of a historic final chapter, with the ultimate target obvious from the beginning: securing a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 world championship in red.
But according to former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, Lewis Hamilton’s long-term future in Formula 1 may depend almost entirely on whether that objective remains realistically achievable.
The British driver’s switch from Mercedes to Ferrari marked the end of one of the most dominant partnerships in Formula 1 history. Over 12 remarkable seasons with the Silver Arrows, Lewis Hamilton collected six world titles and helped deliver multiple constructors’ championships, cementing his place among the sport’s all-time greats.
However, Ferrari’s initial chapter with Lewis Hamilton did not begin in ideal fashion. His first campaign with the Scuderia proved far more difficult than many anticipated, with adaptation challenges, inconsistent competitiveness, and growing scrutiny over whether Ferrari could provide a package capable of matching his ambitions. While the pressure was immense, expectations surrounding the partnership remained equally enormous.
The picture has looked somewhat more encouraging in 2026. Lewis Hamilton has shown stronger pace, greater comfort within Ferrari’s environment, and more competitive performances alongside Charles Leclerc. Even so, Ferrari’s broader technical limitations — particularly in the power unit battle against Mercedes — continue to raise questions about whether the Scuderia can realistically produce a championship-winning package in time.
Guenther Steiner’s view on Lewis Hamilton’s Formula 1 future
Speaking about Lewis Hamilton’s long-term outlook, Guenther Steiner suggested the seven-time world champion no longer has anything left to prove to the wider Formula 1 world. In his view, the motivation keeping the Briton in the sport is no longer about external validation, but about one final personal challenge.
According to the former Haas boss, Lewis Hamilton remains driven by the desire to demonstrate to himself that he can still compete at the very highest level and complete what would be one of the most remarkable achievements in Formula 1 history.
Guenther Steiner acknowledged that the Briton appeared to have started the current campaign in a far healthier position than before, but indicated that retirement would likely become a realistic conversation the moment the championship dream no longer looked attainable.
In Steiner’s assessment, once Lewis Hamilton concludes that an eighth world title with Ferrari is no longer realistically within reach, that could become the natural point to step away from Formula 1 altogether.
What this could mean for Ferrari and Charles Leclerc
Such a scenario would naturally trigger wider questions inside Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton’s arrival was never intended as a short-term publicity move; it was built around the ambition of returning the Scuderia to championship contention with one of Formula 1’s greatest drivers leading the charge alongside Charles Leclerc.
Charles Leclerc remains central to Ferrari’s long-term future, but the team’s strategic direction would inevitably shift if Lewis Hamilton chose to bring his career to a close earlier than expected. Attention would immediately turn toward succession planning, including the possibility of younger talents being positioned as future options.
One name frequently linked with Ferrari’s long-term plans is Oliver Bearman, whose development continues to attract attention across the paddock. Should Lewis Hamilton eventually decide his Formula 1 journey has reached its natural conclusion, Ferrari could suddenly face one of the most significant driver market decisions in years.
For now, however, Lewis Hamilton’s focus remains unchanged. As long as the possibility of fighting for that elusive eighth title remains alive, Ferrari’s high-profile gamble still has a compelling objective to chase.
