The 2025 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix may have delivered Lewis Hamilton’s best result so far this season, but the seven-time world champion was far from satisfied with how the race unfolded—especially in terms of strategy decisions made by the Ferrari pit wall.
Despite finishing inside the top four, the Briton expressed his frustration with the team’s conservative approach, particularly regarding the timing of his second pit stop. The British driver had hoped to delay his stop in order to attack Charles Leclerc in the closing laps with fresher tyres, but Ferrari’s engineers opted for a safer strategy, preventing him from taking that risk.
Speaking to the media ahead of the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was asked about the strategy at the Red Bull Ring: “We talked about it after the race. The team wanted to secure third and fourth place, but I’m not here to start fourth and finish fourth—I want to extract every last tenth of performance. Charles and I ended up on the exact same strategy, but I’ve never wanted to simply copy what my teammate is doing.” – he pointed out.
Lewis Hamilton went on to reveal the reasoning behind the decision from the Ferrari engineers: “They told me that Charles would catch me at the end anyway. I responded by saying that a safety car could come out and completely change the situation.”
He then issued a warning that revealed a growing tension within the team: “I said, ‘I don’t want to reach the point where I start ignoring you.’ We need to work on our communication and keep building our understanding of each other,” Lewis Hamilton added.
The incident highlights a still-developing relationship between Lewis Hamilton and the Scuderia Ferrari team, which is in its first season of collaboration. While Ferrari’s cautious strategy secured solid points, Lewis Hamilton made it clear that his mindset remains one of racing to win—not just to protect positions.
With expectations high for the partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, this episode adds to a growing narrative that strategy and communication could be key to unlocking consistent top results in the second half of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
