Lewis Hamilton has shared an emotional glimpse into his personal life ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, revealing how much it means to have his mother joining him in Montreal for the Formula 1 weekend.
While race weekends are usually dominated by discussions about performance, strategy, and technical upgrades, the Ferrari driver offered a far more personal perspective when speaking about family, travel, and the emotional boost that comes from having loved ones nearby during one of the most intense environments in world sport.
Lewis Hamilton explained that convincing his mother to travel with him again has been a long process, as she has largely preferred to stay close to home in recent years, only making occasional appearances at Silverstone.
“I’ve been trying to get my mum to come on the road for a while, and she hasn’t wanted to travel over the last couple of years, so she’s only really come to Silverstone for… God knows how many years,” Lewis Hamilton said.
The seven-time world champion revealed that he had already tried to encourage her to step outside her comfort zone last year by suggesting a trip to Canada, with hopes of showing her some of the country’s most iconic destinations: “I tried to get her out of her comfort zone last year and bring her to Canada. I wanted to take her to Lake Louise and so many beautiful places in Canada to visit, but excuses kept coming up.”
That changed after a promise made at the end of last year, when his mother told him she was ready to travel more. The result was a memorable experience together earlier this season in China, a trip Lewis Hamilton described as one of the best moments they had ever shared.
“She promised me at the end of the year. She said, ‘Next year is the year I want to travel with you.’ So we did China together, which was honestly the best time we’d ever had together.”
Montreal, however, feels particularly special. Lewis Hamilton explained that this time, it was his mother who asked if she could come to the Canadian Grand Prix, a request he immediately welcomed: “Then she asked me if she could come to Montreal and I was like, absolutely. I think also because it is a really great city to come to. There are really good restaurants here, there’s such a buzz in town.”
One detail made the moment even more meaningful for the Ferrari driver. When he suggested she could bring a friend along for the trip, her answer made it clear what mattered most: “I asked, ‘Do you want to bring a friend?’ And she said, ‘No, I just want to come spend time with you.’”
Lewis Hamilton described his mother as one of the most important people in his life, making it clear how much emotional support family can provide during the relentless Formula 1 calendar: “She’s really my best friend, so I’m really grateful that she’s taking the time to come and be here. I think the energy definitely makes a difference to your weekend when you have support from your family.”
With Formula 1 drivers spending much of the year travelling across continents, opportunities for family time are often limited. Lewis Hamilton admitted that moments like these carry extra emotional weight because of that reality.
He also reflected on how much his mother enjoyed being immersed in Ferrari life when she joined him in China, where the team made her feel completely welcome: “When she came to China, I got to show her the whole team. She loved being around the team, she felt really integrated, and they made her feel so welcome. She loved being around the Italians, and the food was great.”
For Ferrari fans, the story offers a touching reminder that even amid the technical intensity and competitive pressure of Formula 1, family remains a powerful source of motivation. As Lewis Hamilton prepares for another crucial weekend in red, having his mother by his side may provide exactly the kind of emotional lift that no upgrade package can deliver.
