Lewis Hamilton offered a heartfelt personal story during the Canadian Grand Prix press conference, revealing the childhood memory that shaped his lifelong support for Arsenal and explaining why a recent emotional football moment meant so much to him.
While Formula 1 fans are used to hearing Lewis Hamilton discuss racing, car performance and championship battles, the Ferrari driver took a more personal turn when reflecting on football, family and identity. His story offered a rare glimpse into his early childhood and the experiences that influenced one of his strongest sporting loyalties away from motorsport.
Lewis Hamilton explained that the emotions came flooding back as he reflected on Arsenal’s recent success, admitting that the moment genuinely moved him.
“I think, like for everyone, it was very emotional. I shed a tear, to be honest,” Lewis Hamilton said.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion then shared the memory that takes him back to when he was just a young child growing up in Stevenage: “I remember I was five years old and I used to play locally in Stevenage, in Petrie Way. I used to play football around the corner with friends, and I was the only Black kid in the area and among the people I was playing with,” he explained.
Lewis Hamilton described how, like many children, he initially found himself switching allegiances depending on the friends around him, simply trying to fit in with the different football loyalties surrounding him.
“I remember trying to fit in, and all of them supported different teams — West Ham, Tottenham, Manchester clubs. So I was bouncing between all these teams when I was four or five years old, depending on who I was with.”
But the defining moment came thanks to his sister, in a family story that still makes him smile today: “I remember exactly — I mentioned her the other day — she was walking me home and I told her, she asked me what team I supported, and she gave me a dead arm back then, a little dig in my arm, and said, ‘You have to support Arsenal.’ So we had a laugh about it yesterday.”
That playful childhood moment became the start of a lasting emotional connection to the North London club, one that has clearly stayed with Lewis Hamilton throughout his career. The Ferrari driver admitted that after experiencing several near misses as an Arsenal supporter, finally seeing success brought a powerful emotional reaction: “We’ve had so many close moments, and to finally get it… wow, a lot of emotion came up for me, and I’m sure for so many people. Just so happy and proud of the team.”
Lewis Hamilton also praised the direction Arsenal has taken in recent years, highlighting the club’s leadership and long-term progress as something he deeply admires: “Obviously Arsène was great. I think the direction they’ve gone in over the past couple of years has just been fantastic. I’m very inspired by what they’ve done, really proud of the team, and I think they can go from strength to strength from here.”
For Formula 1 fans, the story offered another reminder of the human side behind one of motorsport’s most accomplished drivers. Beyond championships, pole positions and race victories, Lewis Hamilton’s emotional reflection showed how childhood memories, family influence and the simple desire to belong can leave a lasting impact for life.
