Lewis Hamilton towards Imola
Lewis Hamilton isn’t giving up and is trying to bring his winning mindset to Ferrari. Speaking to journalists in Imola, the seven-time world champion stressed that he didn’t come to Maranello to finish seventh or eighth, but that every weekend he asks himself what he can do to win — fully aware that he currently doesn’t have the right car for it.
The expectations for the season had been different, with Ferrari fans’ excitement flaring up in Piazza Castello in Milan after promises of fighting for both championships. Lewis Hamilton is very realistic about it, but still hopeful of overturning the current pecking order, which sees McLaren as the dominant force.
Lewis Hamilton’s words
“I think it’s very difficult to imagine getting closer to McLaren. We beat them in one race, but right now that’s the limit of what we can do. I think the car’s performance allows us to compete with Mercedes and Red Bull, but there are many factors that play into that: if the car is nervous, the operating window is narrow, and it’s almost impossible to stay in it. That’s what we need to work on — making the car easier and more enjoyable to drive,” said the Briton.
“I didn’t expect an easier start to the season. I expected it to be very hard, because I’ve already been through this situation at Mercedes. I knew it would be a challenge. It’s as tough as it gets, on every front, but I think we’re working well together. Championship? The road is still long. But if you look at our current form, and based on all the years of experience, when you’re over 100 points behind at this stage of the season to a fairly dominant car (Ferrari is -152 behind McLaren after six races, ed.), you have to assume you’re not in the fight for the championship. But things could still change.” – the seven-time Formula 1 world champion concluded ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
