Hamilton: “I’ll probably receive a penalty”
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton could drop out of the points if he is penalized for allegedly failing to respect yellow flags.
A disappointing twist could be on the way
Lewis Hamilton’s British Grand Prix weekend could end on another frustrating note. After already receiving a five-second penalty for a false start, the Ferrari driver is now facing the possibility of an additional sanction for an alleged yellow flag infringement during the Virtual Safety Car period triggered by Nico Hulkenberg’s technical retirement.
If Lewis Hamilton is handed even another five-second penalty, he would fall out of the points. The field was bunched up by the late Safety Car, which was deployed following Max Verstappen’s trip into the gravel, leaving the final classification incredibly tight.
“I’ve just been to see the stewards,” the Briton told Sky. “I can’t confirm anything, but I’ll probably receive a penalty.”
Over the team radio, Lewis Hamilton explained that he had not seen the yellow flag. However, based on the television footage, a penalty appears difficult to avoid. The fact that the Ferrari driver immediately anticipated the outcome suggests he was aware there were few alternatives available.
“I would have loved to complete the one-two finish,” he added. “The team did a fantastic job, and we have to keep working like this.”
