Lewis Hamilton as mentor to the new generation
Lewis Hamilton has stated that even after retiring from Formula 1, he will remain present in the sport to support rookies. At the start of the 2025 season, seven new drivers entered the grid (considering the Colapinto-Doohan situation), and the Ferrari driver has consistently taken the time to say kind words about each of them.
The role of experienced drivers
Speaking to the media before the Brazilian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton admitted, “I have always dreamed of being a driver, but even when I step aside, I will always be there to support the young drivers. There is so much negativity from older drivers, many of whom haven’t achieved much themselves.”
“I love seeing these young drivers keeping their heads down with a smile, doing what they love, and achieving success. I am as excited as you are to see how their careers progress.”
The seven-time world champion also reflected on the start of his own career: “I remember arriving here in 2007: I was one of them. It’s an amazing experience, but before you get there, you create all these expectations of what it might be like. Most of the time, it doesn’t match what you imagined.”
Today, with the rise of social media, the pressure on young drivers has grown significantly, as has the commitment required. Lewis Hamilton commented on this as well: “The pressure is extremely high, and these kids are bombarded with questions and, of course, by social media. But I think everyone is handling it very well.”
Colapinto’s contract renewal
The recent news of Franco Colapinto’s contract extension with Alpine for 2026 prompted Lewis Hamilton to comment on the young Argentine. “I think he is doing an excellent job. First of all, he’s a really polite young man. We flew back together, I believe it was for some testing, maybe in Barcelona. We had a pleasant conversation; he’s a very kind person, which is nice to see.”
“With so much pressure, it’s not easy to reach Formula 1, especially under uncertain circumstances. But I think he is doing very well; he just needs to keep going on this path,” Lewis Hamilton concluded.
Franco Colapinto’s season has been challenging, partly due to taking over Jack Doohan’s seat. The team has struggled with a back-of-the-grid car, as seen with teammate Pierre Gasly, who only scored 22 points all season. To truly see Colapinto’s talent, fans may need to wait until next season.
In conclusion, Lewis Hamilton’s message is clear: rookies should be guided and supported, particularly by experienced drivers. Formula 1 is an extremely competitive environment, but the 20 drivers who make it all share the same dream.
