Ollie Bearman or Lewis Hamilton?
After the breakthrough performances of Haas driver Ollie Bearman in recent races, many are questioning who is truly the right fit for Ferrari’s future. Ollie Bearman’s presence in the American team is no coincidence, as he is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. His surprising and unexpected appearance in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, when he had to replace Carlos Sainz at Ferrari, left a strong impression and secured him a seat at Haas for the current season.
What makes the young Briton impressive?
Beyond his speed, Oliver Bearman’s maturity and consistency in just one Formula 1 season stand out, especially driving for a mid-field team. After four consecutive top-10 finishes and building a substantial gap over teammate Esteban Ocon, many are wondering whether Oliver Bearman’s move to Ferrari might not be far off, with 2027 potentially becoming a realistic target.
The real question: who should leave—Leclerc or Hamilton?
While Charles Leclerc’s future at Ferrari seems determined by the Monegasque himself, the situation is different for Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion arrived at Ferrari with the aim of restoring the team to the top, yet the results this season have been far from ideal. It’s clear that Ferrari’s resurgence project will begin in earnest next season, but Hamilton’s performance has raised eyebrows. Despite the limitations of the SF-25, he trails Charles Leclerc by too wide a margin.
Ralf Schumacher, former F1 driver, has voiced his opinion that John Elkann may be considering Ollie Bearman for the future. “I expect more from a driver of such a high level,” Schumacher said on Sky Germany’s podcast Backstage Boxengasse. “He [Hamilton] makes many mistakes; his speed is good, but nothing more. In contrast, I see the young Bearman working wonders with Haas, and he costs just a fraction of what Hamilton does. We’re talking over 60 million a year.”
Schumacher added: “If I were Ferrari’s team principal, I would say it’s not working and prefer to move forward by hiring a young talent like him [Bearman]. Are Hamilton’s problems really just due to the car, or is everything moving too fast for him? I wouldn’t claim to know for sure, but it seems almost like that.”
His analysis casts doubt on Lewis Hamilton’s future: is it time to step aside and make room for young talent? In the current complex and tangled situation Ferrari faces, the questions are more pressing than ever.
