Lewis Hamilton Joins UK Prime Minister to Push for Inclusive Education Reform Through Mission 44
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has taken a major step in his ongoing campaign to transform global education by meeting with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson. The meeting, held at 10 Downing Street, focused on how the British government can work with Hamilton’s Mission 44 foundation to improve opportunities for young people and support a more inclusive education system.
This initiative builds on Lewis Hamilton’s personal journey and the motivation behind launching Mission 44 in 2021. The foundation was created with a clear purpose: to break down barriers within education and help young people—particularly those from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds—gain access to careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Drawing from his own challenging experiences during his school years, Lewis Hamilton has consistently spoken about the lack of belonging he felt in education and the long-term impact that had on him.
During the Downing Street roundtable, Lewis Hamilton worked with policymakers to explore a new educational framework aimed at boosting student engagement. He emphasized the importance of creating a school environment where every student feels seen, heard, and supported. According to Lewis Hamilton, it is vital that pupils from all backgrounds are provided the tools and encouragement to thrive academically and beyond.
Following the meeting, the Ferrari driver expressed gratitude for the government’s willingness to collaborate with Mission 44. He stated that he was pleased to see a commitment to developing a more inclusive education system, and noted that the progress of Mission 44 had exceeded expectations since its launch. He also highlighted the foundation’s ongoing mission to positively transform the lives of vulnerable and underserved students across the UK.
Lewis Hamilton has been open about the personal struggles that inspired his advocacy work. In a 2024 interview with The Sunday Times, he revealed that he has dealt with mental health issues throughout much of his life, stemming from experiences of being bullied at school and the intense pressure of competing in motorsport from an early age. He described facing depression as young as 13, and feeling isolated with no one to confide in during those difficult years.
Earlier this year, the Briton’s Mission 44 initiative expanded its impact with an international partnership announced during the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Teaming up with Ferrari’s title sponsor HP, Mission 44 is now providing young people in both the UK and Miami with access to technology, digital skills training, mentorship, and career development programs. The multi-year agreement also includes direct support for two Miami-based organizations focused on workforce development and career pathways, furthering Mission 44’s global reach.
Through continued advocacy, strategic partnerships, and direct engagement with policymakers, Lewis Hamilton is reinforcing his commitment to equity in education—proving that his impact off the track is just as powerful as his achievements behind the wheel.
