Lewis Hamilton expressed his frustration with sarcasm over the radio at the Miami GP, highlighting structural issues in Ferrari’s strategic management. Martin Brundle criticized the Scuderia for taking too long to decide on a position swap with Charles Leclerc, even though it was clear that Lewis Hamilton was faster at that point on medium tyres.
According to Martin Brundle, Lewis Hamilton had caught up to his Maranello teammate very quickly, making the overtake an obvious decision. However, Ferrari hesitated, and by the time they finally allowed the swap, Lewis Hamilton’s tyres were already worn. This caused frustration in the British driver, clearly evident in his sarcastic radio messages.
Is Martin Brundle backing Lewis Hamilton?
Martin Brundle emphasized how team radios reveal a driver’s emotional state. Lewis Hamilton’s sarcastic remarks showed how disappointed he was with the situation. “Trying to get past Esteban Ocon is certainly not where Lewis wanted to be this year. So I imagine he wasn’t in the best mood.
It looked like they should have let [Lewis] go ahead of Charles immediately,” Martin Brundle continued, “because starting on mediums and switching to hards, and Charles doing the opposite, it was clear they were going to clash at some point.” – the former Formula 1 driver explained.
The key point for Martin Brundle was Ferrari’s inability to make a timely decision. The strategy should have allowed Lewis Hamilton to pass his teammate immediately, given the tyre difference. Instead, it was a clear example of indecision that compromised both drivers’ races and generated unnecessary internal tension.
“But in the end, they had to let Charles back ahead again, and that’s when Lewis commented, ‘Should I let the Williams through as well?’, and that was painful to hear…” the Briton said, “… But some things can’t be taken back.”
