Scuderia Ferrari once again topped the timesheets at the Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona, as Kimi Raikkonen completed 93 laps on Thursday and managed the best lap time, 1:20.872, almost one second ahead of Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racinga. Wet tyres were used early on in the morning session and later during the afternoon, but on a drying track Kimi Raikkonen remained the fastest, while using the Soft tyre.
Ferrari thus ended the final day of the first winter test at the top of the table and can be fully satisfied with the way the testing session was completed by Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. One-lap pace and qualifying performance was unfortunately a major weakness for the Maranello team last year, but by the looks of things the Scuderia has improved over the winter, although the results are not entirely relevant for the moment.
“I think it went pretty OK, considering what we had planned” – said Kimi, as reported by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport – “You always wish to do more here and there, but this is what we did in four days. Compared to how it went a year ago, I think it’s been much smoother going, so it is a good start. We still have a lot of work to be done next week, and then we’ll go from there.”
The Finnish driver was asked to comment on the general atmosphere from the Ferrari team as compared to last season: “I think we have been positive all the time, we’ve been working very well together. Obviously you guys [the media] try to make very negative feelings and everything, but the team hasn’t really changed since last year. It’s always exciting to start the year and so far, like I said, it’s all been running pretty smoothly. Where we’re going to end up during the year, we don’t know, but so far it’s good.” – Kimi Raikkonen concluded.
