Ferrari is preparing to turn the page after a season that delivered more shadows than highlights. Between unmet expectations, a car that was never truly competitive, and a difficult debut for Lewis Hamilton, 2025 has been a year that the team in Maranello would prefer to forget as quickly as possible. According to James Hinchcliffe, former IndyCar driver and now a respected analyst, 2026 could represent a decisive crossroads for the future of the Scuderia.
Hinchcliffe warns: without a clear step forward, Ferrari in 2027 could look very different
The 2025 campaign proved to be a bitter one for Ferrari, unable to secure a single Grand Prix victory and ultimately finishing fourth in the constructors’ championship. This result fell a long way short of the ambitions associated with the Prancing Horse, which is now looking to 2026 as a potential year of rebirth.
James Hinchcliffe, speaking to F1, did not mince his words when assessing the situation:
“There’s no doubt. Charles Leclerc did his part to save the result, but the car and the team have to improve next season.”
The Monegasque driver often managed to mask the limitations of the car with outstanding individual performances, but that was not enough to change the overall direction of the season. Even the arrival of Lewis Hamilton failed to deliver the immediate impact many had hoped for.
The seven-time world champion experienced a more complicated adaptation year than expected, with only one real highlight: victory in the Sprint at the Chinese Grand Prix, which marked Ferrari’s first success of the season.
Hinchcliffe analysed the British driver’s debut campaign in red as follows:
“Lewis Hamilton’s season has been difficult to watch, and there is a lot of internal work to be done to put the seven-time champion in a position where he can perform at his best. On the rare occasions when the car suited him, we saw flashes of the old Lewis, but major steps forward are needed across the board.”
The future of Ferrari
Looking ahead, the analyst sees 2026 as a unique opportunity to relaunch the Ferrari project, especially with the arrival of the new technical regulations. However, he also issued a clear warning:
“2026 offers a huge opportunity for the Scuderia, but if it fails to meet expectations, I imagine Ferrari will look very different in 2027.”
The message is unmistakable: Ferrari can no longer afford transitional or inconclusive seasons. With a determined Charles Leclerc and a Lewis Hamilton eager to return to the spotlight, 2026 will represent the true year of reckoning.
Those in Maranello are well aware of the stakes. Failing once again would mean opening the door to deep and possibly inevitable changes within the team.
