The 2025 Formula 1 season, although truly dramatic, both for Ferrari and, in a stricter sense, perhaps especially for Lewis Hamilton, has triggered a wave of rumours surrounding the future of the seven-time world champion.
Many are asking how long the marriage between the British driver and Ferrari could last if the 2026 championship were to prove disappointing, not only for the Italian team but once again for the driver himself. For the first time since Lewis Hamilton signed his contract with the Maranello-based team in 2024, it is now possible to provide some additional insight into the agreements reached between the two parties.
The contractual obligations emerge
The bond between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari appears to be stronger than it might seem at first glance. According to reports from Bild, the seven-time world champion signed a contract that commits him to remain in Italy at least until the end of the 2027 season, with an option that he alone can decide whether or not to activate in order to stay on through 2028. The intentions of Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari were reportedly very clear when they met almost two years ago to decide what they would do with their respective futures.
Even if on-track performances were not to reach the expected level, Lewis Hamilton has nevertheless secured a salary featuring eye-watering figures. Again according to Bild, he is said to have earned around 100 million euros this year alone, with 55 million euros coming directly from Ferrari’s own funds.
Of course, Formula 1 history teaches that contracts are sometimes also written to be broken or revised if a situation arises in which a driver and a team can no longer continue their journey together. At the moment, Lewis Hamilton does not appear to be entirely enthusiastic about the new regulations, but at the same time he wants to wait until the cars actually start running on track before making any more definitive assessments.
Only time will tell whether the bond between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari is truly as strong as steel, as the latest reports would seem to suggest.
Despite a challenging 2025 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton’s commitment to Ferrari remains legally robust, with contract details revealing a deal that runs through at least 2027. Supported by a massive 100-million-euro annual income, the seven-time champion appears set to wait for the 2026 technical reset before deciding on his long-term future in Maranello.
