In times of crisis for a team, it’s usually the leadership that faces the situation. However, during Ferrari’s tough months in Formula 1, John Elkann spoke very little, and this infuriated the Tifosi quite a bit. It seems that the historic Italian family has little interest in one of the jewels under their control and celebrates minor results when much more is expected from the Scuderia.
One of the first critics of the Ferrari president is Italian motorsport journalist Leo Turrini, who doesn’t hide his disappointment in his latest article posted on his blog on IlQuotidiano.net.
“I am very critical of John Elkann. Everyone has their own story, and he has never had a passion for racing, and there’s nothing wrong with that. What I would like from him, since he has chosen to be the major shareholder of Ferrari, is to demonstrate an awareness that racing is the DNA of this company. His duty is to do everything in his power to make Ferrari a protagonist. Not necessarily a winner, but at least competitive,” the journalist wrote.
However, the Italian journalist admitted that John Elkann also pushed for a major success. “I will add that John has a merit: wanting the return of the red cars to Le Mans and winning. I hope he understands that he should put the same attention on Formula 1. He has been president for five years, and I don’t think he would like to be remembered as a ‘loser’ when it comes to racing.” Leo Turrini pointed out in his recent article.
“I can’t judge Fred Vasseur yet.”
Leo Turrini was also asked for an opinion on Fred Vasseur’s performance since joining the Maranello team in January. However, the journalist didn’t take a stance, wanting to give the Frenchman more time since he arrived at a delicate moment: “I think it’s too early. Any top manager needs time to make their choices. It’s not even September yet. Maybe in a year, we can give an assessment by observing changes, acquisitions, results. This year Fred Vasseur is in an almost impossible situation for anyone: he arrived with the car already prepared, the team already formed by Mattia Binotto, and the drivers already under contract. I would say the same thing if he had arrived and won seven races in a row. We need to revisit this in a year. He seems very convinced and motivated to me.” – the Italian journalist concluded.
