Former Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has been a fundamental part of the Maranello team in recent years. Arriving in Maranello in 1995, he contributed to the successful cycle of the early 2000s. However, since being promoted to team principal in 2019, his relationship with the Italian side has deteriorated, partly due to an underperforming car and issues with the drivers.
Currently, the Italian engineer is at the top of the list to become the leader of Alpine, after Romanian and American engineer Otmar Szafnauer was relieved of his position. Nothing is certain yet, but his return to the paddock has already sparked discussions among many fans, who are quite upset with him over the failures. Despite this turbulent relationship with the Prancing Horse, Erik van Haren, a journalist for De Telegraaf, stated that Maranello made a mistake in letting him go.
“Some sources close to Mattia Binotto say he’s not interested, but I don’t believe that’s true. He would be an excellent choice, as he’s one of the most respected individuals in the paddock. I believe Ferrari shouldn’t have let him go, considering his significant track record and extensive knowledge. He’s been in the environment for over 25 years, and having him is like finding a safe harbor. I don’t know if these rumors are circulating because negotiations are already in the final stages, or just because it makes sense to have him in that role,” the journalist remarked.
