The year 2023 was supposed to be the year of a definitive leap in quality after the promising performances seen in the first part of the previous season. However, right from the start, the track exposed the flaws of the Ferrari SF-23 single-seater, which Frederic Vasseur inherited after the separation between the Maranello team and Mattia Binotto.
The first ten races of this season have confirmed what was already observed during testing. The latest car developed under Mattia Binotto’s direction is not up to the task of competing for the World Championship title and, at least up to this point, not even for individual race wins. In the Austrian weekend, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz seemed to have found a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel, but it turned out to be only temporary as they faced difficulties both at Silverstone and in Hungary.
In a recent interview with Corriere dello Sport, Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur talked about how the current car’s performance level is a result of mistakes made in the past management. “It’s an inheritance from the last ten years, not just the last one. In Formula 1, it takes time to make changes. I knew I couldn’t change the mentality of an entire team in just six months.” – he pointed out.
During his first semester as Team Principal of Ferrari, the former Alfa Romeo boss began to make some organizational changes. From the departures of Laurent Mekies and David Sanchez to the arrival of the two “top engineers” announced a few weeks ago, the Maranello team is showing its determination to distance itself from past mistakes and strive to reclaim a World Championship title that has been elusive for sixteen years.
