Fred Vasseur has never kept it a secret. To ensure Ferrari returns to winning ways, it’s necessary to strengthen a team that has witnessed more departures than arrivals in recent years. However, the philosophy used by Sergio Marchionne, who preferred nurturing internal resources, will not be followed. Instead, the French manager will look beyond the walls of Maranello.
Hence, it’s no longer surprising that two top technicians are joining Scuderia Ferrari. Amidst rumors and speculations (some mention Loic Serra, Mercedes’ Performance Director, while others hope for Pierre Waché, Adrian Newey’s right-hand man at Red Bull), there are still no certainties about what will be the choices of Fred vasseur for the next years.
When questioned about this matter in an interview for the Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere dello Sport, the Team Principal of the Scuderia explained the reasons behind what may seem like a somewhat “wait-and-see” approach from the outside.
“The truth is that these figures are currently active in other teams,” the Frenchman explained. “We still don’t know when we can have them with us. Unfortunately, Formula 1’s timescales are not like those in football: if I hire an engineer today, I might be able to use them in two years, and the results of their work will be visible in three.” – the former Alfa Romeo boss pointed out.
Despite the common practice of gardening leave in all teams, which slows down the process of hiring new resources, Fred Vasseur confirms that the Formula 1 department of Ferrari will soon expand.

“This year, we will hire around eighty technicians, half of them new and the other half to replace those who leave, retire, or are moved to other areas,” the Frenchman explained.
But then, why not reveal the identities of the key figures in the red market? “We will disclose the names when they enroll their children in school. We must act discreetly to minimize their gardening period as much as possible.” – Fred Vasseur concluded.
