With the recent cancellation of the Japanese Grand Prix from this year’s calendar, Formula 1 is looking for a circuit that could replace the absence of Suzuka, which was supposed to host the event on 10 October. The severe crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic, which had already led to the cancellation of the Australian GP (that could be replaced by a race in Qatar in November), could also seriously question the scheduling of the Turkish Grand Prix, officially programmed for the beginning of October and perhaps postponed by one week, just as the perfect substitute for the Japanese appointment.
Great Britain, in fact, has included Turkey among the destinations in the red zone, a fact that would lead to the impossibility of the great majority of the teams registered in the world championship to take part in the event. However, while the situation is still being carefully evaluated by the authorities and organizers, leading German automobile magazine Auto Motor und Sport is launching the hypothesis of a second race in the United States, to be held a week before the already scheduled US Grand Prix in Austin. According to the German magazine, Formula 1 could therefore return to Indianapolis, with the famous track that would avoid the scenario of two consecutive races on the same Circuit of the Americas.
The entry of the Indiana track into the calendar could only occur if Turkey actually withdraws from the championship, regardless of the date decided for the race weekend in the latter country. By doing so, the sensational return of Formula 1 to a track that has gone down in history in 2005 could actually take place: in the 2005 race, 16 years ago, only six cars were on the starting grid. Previously, the racetrack had hosted GPs from 2000 to 2007, and then disappeared from the radar along with its version of the track as an alternative to the oval.
