“We have the best pair of drivers”, these are the words of Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto, who wanted to express his appreciation for Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc at the beginning of August. But the Ferrari team principal also wanted to pinpoint the hard work of his team: Ferrari has improved the car compared to the 2020 Formula One season (to be honest, making it worse would have been impossible), thus reducing the gap from the best teams. The and ranking is there to testify the progress: Scuderia Ferrari has already doubled its tally of points compared to 2020 and is is fighting McLaren for third place in the constructors’ standings, with one week to go until the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
Ferrari has improved a lot in qualifying, which has helped score some positive results on Sunday, but Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto also explains another key factor that the Italian side was able to improve: the pit stops. According to the team principal from Maranello, the Scuderia has improved a lot in the speed of the stops: “Our goal is to try to improve in all areas in 2021. A good pit stop, for example, is when in the third second the driver has already left the pit. If we look at the data, 84% of our pit stops this year were under three seconds: last year they were 48%. And it is important, because if your pit lasts longer it can put you in a difficult situation. There is only one team that is doing better than us in terms of the percentage of pit stops under three seconds” – added Mattia Binotto, obviously referring to Red Bull. The Milton Keynes team is at an absolutely unreachable level for others, but Ferrari’s hope is to reduce the gap as much as possible. The 2022 Formula 1 season will also be decided by these details.
