Charles Leclerc delivered an outstanding performance at the F1 United States Grand Prix in Austin, keeping Ferrari fans on the edge of their seats from the very start. The Monegasque driver finished the race in third place after a weekend filled with action, challenges, and strategic risks. This marked his sixth podium of the season, returning to the top step after six difficult race weekends.
Leclerc started the race on soft tyres, a choice that paid dividends in the opening stages. At the start, he overtook Lando Norris, who was on the medium compound, to claim second place. Lando Norris later mounted a strong challenge against the #16 Ferrari, with Leclerc defending exceptionally over several laps. However, on lap 22, the McLaren driver managed to regain the position.
Following a battle with Lewis Hamilton, which caused him to lose a little ground to Norris, Leclerc made a pit stop to switch to medium tyres. Step by step, he regained pace, and when the #4 McLaren pitted for fresh soft tyres, it rejoined the track behind the Ferrari. In the closing stages, Norris managed to close back up and finally overtook Charles Leclerc with five laps remaining.
Leclerc’s post-race reflections
Charles Leclerc first discussed his decision to start on soft tyres, admitting he was concerned when he realized he was the only driver among the top fifteen to do so. He explained, “I knew it was a slightly risky move. My plan was to use the softs to try and get into clean air. It was a somewhat optimistic prediction. There were two cars ahead, but we went for it. At least we gained a position, which helped a lot for the rest of the race. Overall, I’m very happy because the second half of the year has been difficult. Returning to the podium here after a challenging FP1, with a few issues, shows that we’ve recovered well, and I’m pleased.”
Reflecting on his battle with Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc added, “I had fun today. Unfortunately, I lost in the end, but it was a beautiful and exciting fight in the car.” While Ferrari cannot consider the race fully satisfying, as the ultimate goal remains to return to winning ways, the performance in Austin allows the team to leave Texas with a smile after a challenging season.
