Fred Vasseur shines in Monaco: the team principal reveals a hilarious backstory that occurred on the podium while celebrating Charles Leclerc’s victory in Monte Carlo
Charles Leclerc chose a rather original way to celebrate his victory in Monaco. The Ferrari driver #16 finally fulfilled his dream of standing on the top step of the podium in his home race.
A childhood dream realized for himself and for his father, as he stated over the team radio at the end of the Grand Prix. His colleagues congratulated him, including Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz, who had only kind words for him. And Fred Vasseur? The Ferrari team principal couldn’t be happier: it was the second win of the year for him and the team, following the victory in Australia. Celebrations were in order.
In front of the cameras of Canal+, the French network, the two indulged in a funny exchange. Charles Leclerc recalled an old promise from when both were at Sauber: he as a driver, Fred Vasseur as team principal.
“Fred, get your swimsuit ready because in 2018 we bet that if we scored points, we would jump into the sea in the harbor. We didn’t manage it then, but now, later, we’ll do it. I hope you all are ready.”
The French engineer, being a true showman, made no promises since he could find himself “in serious trouble” for something that happened during the podium celebrations: “I could be in jail because I sprayed champagne on the Prince on the podium. But he started it!” Fred Vasseur responded to Canal+.
For the first time, an emotional Prince Albert joined the celebration for Charles Leclerc in Monaco. Now Ferrari is even closer to Red Bull: can the Scuderia really dream of the World Championship?
