Formula 1 drivers are well-known for earning huge salaries. Top drivers such as Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Lando Norris collect tens of millions of euros each year, not only from their contracts but also from sponsorship deals and personal endorsements. However, what is less frequently discussed is the wealth of those leading the teams: the Formula 1 Team Principals.
These team bosses shoulder immense responsibility. From deciding strategy and guiding driver development to representing the team politically and managing operations during Grand Prix weekends, their role is central to a team’s success or failure. Whether they are defending their squad or calling out rivals, Team Principals are vital to Formula 1’s competitive dynamic.
Here is the ranking of Formula 1 Team Principals by estimated net worth, as reported by The Express.
Toto Wolff – Team Principal, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team
According to Forbes, Austrian executive Toto Wolff officially reached billionaire status as early as 2023. His current estimated net worth stands at £1.27 billion, making him by far the wealthiest figure among F1 team leaders.
Toto Wolff is not only the Team Principal but also owns a one-third stake in the Mercedes F1 team. In 2020, he also purchased a 1% share of the Aston Martin Formula 1 team from billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
Wolff led Lewis Hamilton to six of his seven Formula 1 World Championships, helping Mercedes dominate the hybrid era. In 2025, he continues to guide the team during its transition into the post-Hamilton era, with George Russell and young Italian talent Andrea Kimi Antonelli behind the wheel.
Christian Horner – Former Team Principal, Red Bull Racing
British former team boss Christian Horner’s net worth is significantly lower than Wolff’s—roughly 30 times less—standing at around £40 million.
Horner was dismissed from Red Bull Racing after the 2025 British Grand Prix, ending a two-decade tenure that began with the team’s F1 debut. Despite the controversy, his legacy remains impressive: four Drivers’ Championships with Sebastian Vettel and four more with Max Verstappen.
Under Horner’s leadership, Red Bull was transformed from a newcomer into one of the most dominant forces in the sport’s modern history. Now, however, he must look to new challenges outside the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
Andrea Stella – Team Principal, McLaren Racing
Italian engineer Andrea Stella took over as Team Principal at McLaren in the 2023 season, replacing Andreas Seidl, who left to become CEO of Sauber ahead of the brand’s transformation into Audi in 2026.
Under Stella’s leadership, McLaren enjoyed a major resurgence. The team won the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, thanks to a remarkable turnaround that saw the car become the fastest on the grid in the second half of the season. In 2025, the Woking-based outfit is currently leading both championships.
Andy Cowell – Team Principal and CEO, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team
British engineer Andy Cowell replaced Mike Krack as Team Principal at Aston Martin for the 2025 season and also serves as the team’s CEO.
Though financial details are scarce, The Express estimates his net worth to be around £12 million. Cowell is best known for his previous role at Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, where he helped develop dominant hybrid engines.
Frédéric Vasseur – Team Principal, Scuderia Ferrari
Frenchman Frédéric Vasseur is reported to earn an annual salary of approximately £3.9 million, with a total net worth of about £5.6 million.
His figures could increase significantly if he manages to deliver Ferrari’s first Drivers’ Championship since 2007, especially now with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton racing for the Scuderia. However, with McLaren dominating the 2025 season, the task remains incredibly challenging.
Vasseur succeeded Mattia Binotto at Ferrari, having previously held key roles at both Alfa Romeo and Renault.
James Vowles – Team Principal, Williams Racing
James Vowles transitioned from Mercedes, where he served as Chief Strategist, to Williams Racing ahead of the 2023 season. At Mercedes, he worked closely with Lewis Hamilton and contributed to many of the team’s championship wins.
According to The Express, his current net worth is estimated at around £4 million.
Toto Wolff has publicly praised Vowles’ work and even hinted at the possibility of his return to Mercedes in the future, stating: “He could stay at Williams for 10 years. Sometimes you just have to let the bird fly and see what happens.”
At Williams, Vowles has been credited with making significant progress. He is now rebuilding the team with drivers Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz.
Oliver Oakes – Former Team Principal, Alpine F1 Team
British businessman Oliver Oakes became the second-youngest Team Principal in Formula 1 history when he took over Alpine in 2025 at just 36 years old.
However, his stint was short-lived, as Flavio Briatore returned to take charge of the team following Oakes’ resignation.
His estimated net worth is around £2 million.
Laurent Mekies – Former Team Principal, Racing Bulls / New Red Bull Team Principal
French engineer Laurent Mekies initially served as Team Principal for the Racing Bulls (formerly AlphaTauri) before being promoted to replace Christian Horner at Red Bull Racing in 2025.
His current net worth is estimated to be around £1 million. However, that figure could rise dramatically if he leads Red Bull to further championship success in the coming seasons.
Ayao Komatsu – Team Principal, Haas F1 Team
Japanese engineer Ayao Komatsu succeeded fan-favorite Guenther Steiner as Team Principal of the Haas Formula 1 Team. While Steiner’s net worth is estimated at around £3.9 million, Komatsu’s current wealth is believed to be just under £1 million.
Despite limited resources, Komatsu helped lift Haas from the bottom of the Constructors’ Standings by securing occasional points in 2023 and 2024, mostly thanks to experienced driver Nico Hülkenberg.
He is now reshaping the team’s direction by investing in young talents like Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon.
